  1. 130psi across all cylinders, negligible difference squirted some oil down the plug holes, got it all over the valves tho, so not very accurate as to rings or valves i suppose 150 psi across all cylinders, not too many percent higher. Went to set the headlamps a few days ago. turns out all the adjustment screws are rounded off and bent. Just replaced them all with stainless cap screws. Lush

  4. Commer started wonderfully and had a nice foggy drive to the musuem. Did about 50 laps of the stalls as they opened up, its all junk i already have tho haha (minus the big bin of used pornography, im fully digital). Tho i never did find a 1/2" ROE spanner, they must be rare cos all mine have gone missing too. Went through the musuem, because it would be rude not to. Any one know what that tiny american V8 is thats on the outside wall of the oldtime garage? its got to be sub 2L, would be a cool engine to use in a project. Watched all the piners giving the truck a once over before leaving with my handful of bits (another ign lamp for my morry, want to change out the glass and have matchy matchy ones, and a smiths vac gauge. Nice sub $10 buys there) Took off in the truck. Instantly something didnt feel right. But kept on trucking cos whatever it wasnt bad enough to slow me down. Got to Te Rapa straight, it conked out. wiggled all the plug connections and started away again Got half way down Te Rapa straight, conked out again. Noticed the fan bet was pretty slack (had noticed i was only getting low amps) tightened it up and away i go. Get to The base, conk out right on the turn off. Seems like its not getting fuel. fuel filter looks a bit dirty, i remove it and use some fuel hose to bridge the gap. Starts up and as im already in the lane, i turn into the base, hoping to get to a park to give it a good look at. Get to the lights at the crossing and it dies can idle briefly but dies as soon as i try to move. Blocking erry body. All good attitudes fortunately, start to call AA when a guy in a waikato toyota truck stops and offers to tow me outta there and to the car parks, what a GC. Strip off the bonnet and sides. Notice one of the vac lines is split and no longer connected. cut the damaged end off and silicone the whole lot together. Go for a walk while it sets. Get back and it starts and runs fine. Do 20 laps of the car park to test it out. Goes fine. Go off down the boulevard for further testing (that back road part going away from the base). Get another 300m and it conks out again. Peak at the engine again trying to find a vac leak, spin the starter, and it jams. Also notice the starter solenoid is falling apart and the engine earth strap is loose. Remove starter, find a little bit of something, probably from my clutch/gearbox who knows, sitting next to the flywheel. Rebuild the starter with spare nuts and bolts. chuck it back in and tighten the earth strap. Test the flow from the fuel pump, seems kinda low. Nother test drive, get about 1km before it stops, am certain its the fuel pump now. pull a plug, dry open the fuel bowl, dry Pull the pump out take the lid off Its literally packed to the top with shit. Theres a mesh screen that sits over the top there and it was full to that. pick all that shit out and clean everything probably 30 years of shit from the tank, the fuel filter is at totally the wrong end. put it all back together Cool runnings all around hamilton from then on need to cut the line from the tank and install a disposable filter there (a glass bowl one may be nice too), also will take note that i need to flush and reseal the tank at some point. 4 hours after leaving the swapmeet... I aint even mad, was a lovely day to work on a car, nothing serious (tho that little bit is concerning, im sure i can hear the throwout bearing now, maybe im imagining it. will look at the parts manual and see if anything matches up, actually im sure there was an identical bit found in the same place by a previous owner.)   5. New head gasket and im away. Just went for a hoon around the block. Not a hugely noticable increase, circa 10% is probably close. Means i can go from stopped to slow slighty faster. Drop the clutch and instead of bogging out it gets up and goes. Havnt tested top speed, and infact my tyres are flat so things should improve. The noise this puts out is fantastic

  7. sweet, fired up just now quite happily. had left the distributor upside down and a small amount of oil had leaked inside. so cleaned that up flushed the carb out with fresh fuel incase there was water contamination, let it dry and refilled charged the battery, must have run it pretty low. will fully reassemble tomorrow and give it a few tests, will be interesting to see if iv gained much performance. Probably should have lapped the valves back in while i was there. Will also recheck the compression when hot to get an idea of how tired this thing is, not for any real reason other than interest
  8. New gasket on and seems to seal up well. Now its just being a pain and not starting up can get it running for about a second or 2 but thats about it. I resoldered up the fuel line the other day (filled it with water incase it may explode on me) so i figured there may have been some left in there. flushed the line out with fresh fuel and emptied the carb bowl. Now i see the battery is flat, so am waiting on it charging before i try again. getting good/same spark as before, leads are all correct, dizzy only goes in 1 way. checked the compression (cold, plugs out, WOT) all are about 110psi (fresh rebuild on a 918 sidevalve, hot, would give maybe 130 max so that seems pretty good) If i still cant get it going il swap the standard head back on and see what happens. Cant imagine the higher comp head is casing it tho
  9. Nah, the old gaskets have obviously been on and off a few too many times. Really was time for a new one. Over night delivery and i have a new one to go on for not much more than a can of gasket spray
  10. may want to hook it up then and see if it improves. Should just ignore timing marks and tune off the vac readings
  11. whipped the head back off it would appear that some loctite (one of the studs had come loose) had made its way out of the hole and onto the block surface. Hopefully thats the problem sorted edit: ordered a new headgasket, figured the old one has been reused a bit much. Getting blowby into the waterways Looks like all the pistons are 1mm over size (little surprised to see it in metric, the last ones i saw were in thou's) So, that takes my 918cc up to 950cc. Thats getting into morry thou territory. Bores look nice, no damage or noticable wear, breathes pretty heavily tho. Will start saving up my money for a rering, or bore out to +060", new valve stemseals and oversize exhaust valves. Heres hoping this gasket sorts it, if not im so done
  12. Spent the day making the new bolt, decoking the engine and installing my high comp head. Doesnt seal, blowing out the drivers side between 2-3. will whip it back off and anneal the headgasket (go go gadget camp stove) If that doesnt work im going to assume the block isnt flat. CBF taking the engine back out to do this atm, so will be back on with the std head if it is

  14. My cousin has a similar set up 2 old house buses which have gradually become connected as the family has grown. Neat sunroom/lookout up top
  15. Installed chrome windscreen trim replaced diff pinion seal snapped the friggin cotter bolt which clamps the distributor in place. will have to hunt one down or make one wanted to go for a wof tomorrow too

  17. Yes, i used cool and Hamilton in the same sentence. Have a new camera and want to play with it a little Im thinking, old dirt roads, run down old barns, native bush. Show off my chassis flex on a stump or something. Any suggestions? Reasonably close would be nice But il bring my kero stove and make a day of it

  21. can you close the doors up an lock them (over the standard house door)? lush security feature, weld em up if you go overseas/get locked in by someone
