i used a wood block as a blanking plate but a metal one is so much nicer. Cut a piece of broken mower body and drill holes maybe? -

Yellow. Very much like mild steel. -
For primer alone a supercheap spray gun will do fine. And i personally like topcoat over primer as it slows moisture getting through the primer quick well.

Does it need something in the balance/leaks department? Seems to run on 2 at idle.

I've tried that. I've tried the drill press at work, i've tried concrete drills, i tried test holes elsewhere, it's odd. -

Whenever you're around, have a look at it for me. It's the bar, was drilled for the ball to go through, but it's nearly tool steel in hardness below 1.5 mm. Drill bits turn to smoke. -
Cast iron doesn't like molasses bathes, steel on the other hand will withstand it much better.

What are tow bars made from? i thought it was mild steel but it was hard work cutting it and drilling it, can only go 2 mm deep before it turns hard like tool steel. Chipped a piece off, it appears soft on the outside but the core is all crystallized. Wouldn't have thought it would work harden but maybe it has? -
i thought yours was the one at MOTAT as it has the same plate.

Used to use hydrochloric acid at the radiator shop. Watch your tools rust and shrink before your eyes. Hence i'm keen to see molasses.

Urethane is stronger and more resilient. i have used it for lighter things than engine mounts and guess if you had those through bolt type mounts they'd be no real problem. -

Not sure phosphoric acid is that good for alloy, put some in a drink can and scrub the coating off the inside with a wire brush and wait an hour, the can dissolves. -
Some cracks have been in those engines since they were cast, it's the ones around the pan flange tends to be the problems. Americans like to over react to any crack and don't seem to know valve seats can be repaired ect..

Red oxide is ok but housepaint isn't very good over any metal that isn't galvanized roofing

Some people are removing water pumps and going thermosyphon for extra reliability.
