Rhyscar
hey guys, if anyone has access to either a aw11 or ae86 manual steering rack and wouldn't mind going over them with a tape measure I'd be very grateful! I'm wanting to determine if the ae86/aw11 rack will fit into my ae101. Currently I've found the EE80/tercel shape crosses over and all pictures of ae86 look very similar to what I have. What I need is; - Length of rack housing - Distance between mounts (centres) - Mount bolt centres - Length of rack (between tie rod mounting points) Hopefully with the addition of a Quaife quick rack kit this should be a pretty easy and cost effective way of getting some quick steering into the ae101. Thanks in advance!
Ash Kelly barr
I've got some spares at home I'll measure tonight for ya. Mine are aw11. I know people put aw ones in ae86's but no idea if they change mounts or possibly have rack spacers that allow ae86<aw11 If you check ae86 forums I'm sure someone would have written up something on aw-ae86
thegreatestben
I wasn't sure if the racks themselves swap over but I know the Quaife quick rack kit fits both the AW11 & the AE86.
Rhyscar
Yeah I'm going on the theory that aw11/ae86 swap over no worries. Mounts are the same part number and look very similar to ae101. Aw11 is the cheap and easily available option.
Truenotch
Didn't we pull the rack out of the red AW parts car? I thought sure we did...
Rhyscar
Yeah but you had sold it I think.
Dell'orto
KE70 rack would do the trick wouldn't it? Assuming you're wanting to ditch power steering?
Rhyscar
I'm keener on aw11/ae86 as there is a quaife quick rack kit available relatively cheap that will quicken it even more. Ideally I'd like less than 2 turns lock to lock. Has to be road legal so steering quickner a no go.
Truenotch
KE70 is most likely the same as an AE86 rack on the outside/in almost every way. They're the same chassis. I remember now, that rack went to Invercargill.
Rhyscar
I see. Yes in answer to your question then Brad. I'm keen on mounting positions/details.

cletus
if its any help you can use a quickner if it goes through the design approval process
Rhyscar
Design approval for the manufacture of the internal gearing/shafts or for the mounting of it? I was under the impression they were a big no-no
cletus
the unit itself is what needs approval- mounting and steering shaft mods are covered by the rulebook
Rhyscar
Good to know. Wonder if there are any units that have already been approved? Quite a few rally cars have them but most aren't certed with them in..
