Alright, about 2 months ago i replaced the old 1.3 engine in my mk2 escort with a nice 1.6 out of a sport. Ran sweet till 2 weeks ago. was cruising up the bombbays put my foot down and it just started to crap its pants and now does it every time i put my foot down... took it to the local mechanic who blew the jets out and checked the overall condition of the carb and he thinks its the secondaries (not sure if he knows exactly).. anyone had any similar problems with the dcds??

Does it drive well at low/partial throttle.

Honestly.iv.never played with any carbs with secondaries, but if it idles nice and drives nice until you mash your foot down then it sounds like an issue with the secondaries - not opening or jets loose/fallen out? Perhaps not the right size for the engine?

Did the mechanic actually diagnose what was wrong or just suggest it? Use a better one i guess.

First step is check the carb condition. No dried up gaskets giving vac leaks? Damaged or split diaphrams? All linkages correct and functioning fully?

All passages clean? And i mean real clean, can chase tiny bits of swarf deep inside for ages.

If you open it up take note of the jet sizes for further diagnosis

Did what he do make any difference? They're pretty simple carbs to work on aye. Just get a can of compressed air and start pulling it apart, look through each jet and if you can't see through give it a squirt till you can.

Does sound like a blocked jet to me though.

nah nothing helped and its the original carb that came with the engine. it drives sweet low / partial throttle just when you hit that 100km sign put your foot down it just bogs out till you ease up

he pulled the top of the carb off cleaned it out, removed the jets, cleaned them, reassembled but no difference, no leaks or anything he doesnt think the secondaries are 'spraying' enough. took it to another mechanic for a quick look and he said the same thing. we took the top off and the secondarie barrel was dry compared to the other..

Ah right.

Well ensure your ignition system is up to spec, wack some new plugs in and make sure the coil is working correctly and not overheating. If the points are out of wack it can cause misfires at high rpm if the dwell is too small, however by the sounds of it it's doing it under load and not speed?

You say it was working fine for the first two weeks and then started playing up? Have you replaced the fuel filter? How does it behave when you gradually open the throttle compared to rapidly planting your foot?

Check for vacuum leaks around the carb too, spray some brakleen around the base and throttle shafts and see if the revs pick up.

That's about all I can suggest via online diagnostics right now.

Mate I live at waihi beach, if you have no joy with local mechanics I can have a look if you want, Ive mucked around with webers for years. they pretty basic and I got a box of weber carbs and parts sittin under my bench. is it for the white mk2 4 door at the beach? pm me if want me to have look at yor car. Also mate check your point gap, cant remember exact gap clearance but crossflows point gap always tends to close when given a bit of stick and give symptoms you described when under load

As said earlier don't discount the other parts of the system, go over the ignition and fuel system (filter & lines) as well and eliminate that side so you can concentrate your efforts (if you haven't already) my trouble shooting with carbs is 'what is the problem and what isn't the problem' sometimes working out what isn't the problem is easier and helps narrow the options 'What isn't' is worked out with proof, this can get tricky without some toys (timing light, multimeter....) a few times I've stripped and rebuilt carbs to find a loose connection in the distributor, bloody old cars, good luck!

so turns out it was the dizzy. points not opening at all. dizzy shaft was scewed, lose as. took the old dizzy out of the 1.3 i took out of it, chucked new condenser and points on and bam there she goes.

I must add though, she doesnt give as much pull as she did before, i mean she goes, but not as well as she did when we first put her in.  could this be advanced timing??

But cheers for the help guys!

Oh so im a bit late to throw my 2 cents in, but ill do it for the hellabit

Fuel problems can usually be diagnosed by a loss/lack of power or response (usually gradual)

Electrical problems are more on/off like a switch, cough/splutter/miss, that sort of thing

Authough in saying that, it can be hard sometimes to distinguish, more something picked up with experience

Glad you got it sorted tho :thumbleft:

If its a motorcraft dizzy your running, put dizzy internals at full advance then put spot weld on plate so its locked at full advance then set point gap then set ignition timing. I found xflows with a motorcraft distributor, decent cam and compression respond better by locking dwell angle at full advance and disconnecting the vacuum advance altogether, or get an early xflow lucas dizzy and use that. Can use mini lucas dizzy by removing gear on bottom and putting a xflow gear on shaft. if your xflow motor has been tuned a bit set your timing to static marks or with light then advance timing slowly til revs rise then when revs stumble back off touch then lock dizzy.. If u need some bits to fix your dizzy I got some lucas and motorcraft dizzys in a box in my shed somewhere.
