Raizer
50mm longer than a normal Mk2 escort box and all the gears look a lot bigger than a sport box Cortina?
J-W-G
Ill check out my type e see if its the same when i get home
Raizer
Also check the input/output shafts splines, if there the same as a Escort box its more than likely a mk3 Cortina 1600 Kent box.
sholdowa
As far as I know, all 4 speed ford RWD gearboxes are the same length. Only the type 2 is cast with an integral bellhousing, which makes it pretty easy to distinguish, as are the old 3 rail boxes ( tailshaft cast in ). I know the 3 litre capri box has a longer input shaft. Maybe you've got a type 9 5 speed box there? If so, you'll need to mod the gearbox crossmember and prop shaft... Cortina 4 speeds are the same length as the T9, Escort boxes are shorter. Kent powered MK3 Cortina gearboxes are the same length as the 2L ones but have the same input/output shaft splines as Escort (think there the same as an Escort box, just with a longer tail section)
sholdowa
TBH I've never noticed any difference... maybe you're talking about Mk.4 / 5 cortinas which I've never played with. The only unique tail section I know of was in my RS2000s, which moved the lever forward a couple of inches.
Raizer
MK3/4/5 Cortinas, your RS2K boxes are basically a 2L Cortina box with the shifter moved forward to the same spot as a standard Escort box.
two_days_late
There is definitely a 4 speed box the same length as the type

bigmatt4
easy to tell 1600 box from 2 litre. steel top 2litre alloy top 1600 different ratios between the
Unclejake
That's a single rail 1600cc box in your photo Shaneo. They came in at least two ratio sets. If you remove the lid and count the teeth on the cog closest to the flywheel (the teeth on the the input shaft, not the spline) it should have either 17 or 19 teeth. 19 is the 'close ratio' box that came in various things such as 1600cc GT MK3 Cortinas and 1600cc GT Capris. You are slightly lucky to have found one with a drain bung. Many of them didn't have a drain at all.
shaneo
thanks for all the help guys turns out its a close ratio box have linned up a bell housing but the deal means that I have to give up my 3.5 diff head.
