Crossflow - Headers (what is the best)

Hi Everyone

I have a 77' MK2 2Door Escort

It has a 1.6 Crossflow with Cams and Weber carb.

I am trying to decide whats the best exhaust system for my car.

Should i go 4-1, or 4-2-1.

I understand that the 4-2-1 will give more low end/mid-range torque.

With the 4-1 giving More mid/high end hp.

What would be more suitable for the 1.6 litre? Also what would be a suitable diameter for the rest of the exhaust system

Heres a few I've been looking at...

($255)COBY EXTRACTORS (unsure of specs) 24158404full.jpg

($330)ASHLEY EXHAUST MANIFOLD: 2.25" BORE (4-1 TYPE, 1.625" PRIMARY, 2.25" EXIT) ashm03manifold1.jpg

($260)ASHLEY EXHAUST MANIFOLD: 2" BORE ( 4-2-1 TYPE, 1.375" PRIMARY, 1.5" SECONDARY, 2" EXIT) ashleyxfmanifold2.jpg

Then there is the Tony law Race exhaust manifold, but at round $900.00 is a bit out of my bracket.

And the products from 105speed - don't have any info on these, heard they are good though

*Also the Headers from Mass racing sound good and appear to be used on a lot of tuned crossflows, Some info on these would be great

Thanks for any info! :salute:

those all look too short tbh. they make them like that so they fit easier but you will find to get tuning in a useable powerband you really need something like 800mm-10000mm long primarys with a 4-1 setup or in 4-2-1 at least getting that sort of length out of primary+secondary tubes with long secondary tubes.

ideal lengths depend on cam/desired powerband etc.

that said even extractors with short tubes (or even uneven lengths) will be better than most factory cast log manifolds as while the resonance tuning effect may be generally negligible they wont pose a restriction at least.

OK thanks for the info, do you know any headers that would be suitable. Should i possibly go down the road of custom extractors :?

Heres a photo of the Mass Manifold. Something more like this? Can't find this product for sale anywhere though

it really depends on the tune of your engine cam/compression etc. and what you are trying to acheive just a nice strong engine for a street car or tuning for a race car or rally car or what - really need to know that to determine how far it is worth going

but yeah that last pic with the long runners is more what im talking about. do you just want to buy something and slap it on or are you inclined to do your own work if you went down the custom route?

if you have some welding/ fab skills. or know someone who can weld a few pipes up. buy those cobys. chop them off just before the collector. merge the 2 middle pipes together. same with the outside. then run 1 3/4 pipe from there. then merge into 1 somewhere up to double the length of the primary's, probably into around 2.25" pipe. then jump up to 2.5" after 200-300mm from collection point for rest or exhaust. can change lengths of 2-1 pipes to tune it. will depend on your cams and setup as above, but alot of its is trial and error on n/a stuff.

making your own 2-1 merge is pretty easy once you know how, and way better than the junk in those top pics

Cheers for info guys.

Yeah I'm trying to achieve a nice strong street engine at this stage. I am more inclined to just buy something and slap it on (need to learn to weld!). Unsure of the cams (were put in by previous owner) and compression.

Those 105speed's you have look the biz, cars looking choice too. So did you buy those Cobys same as above, and they had to modifyed to pass your firewall?

Have you noticed a notable difference in the 105speed's over the Cobys?

Did those 105's cost you around $700 inc shipping?

In my experience the factory Escort Sport 4/2/1 ones worked best for mildly tuned engines.

Most of the aftermarket ones have comparatively large primary tubes whch is great for high rpm but not much help for a daily/road car.

yeah the 105 speed ones are definitely sweeter, better at top end but I havent noticed any difference down low. They look far better though :D

The first set I got for free appeared to be off a cortina(I thought they were the same), the second set are actually pacemaker brand and fit perfectly. I braced the exhaust becuase I was told it was necessary and I think I stressed it a little in mounting it, so when it got hot cylinder 4 broke

I think it was more like $850 all up but the dollar is probably different now
