BDA780
The best way to decide is to select a engine power figure and go from there. If I was to go the easyer way it'd be Zetec or Vauxhall XE. We converted a MK2 2door to XE, with a SBD kit. It has 220hp iirc and has done every targa for 4-5years without a rebuild. SR20 would be just as sweet no doubt. The engine mounts, gearbox and engine height would be the main worry. Premier Autos have done a couple I believe. What gearbox and diff you gonna use? Raizer
Thought he jammed a pinto in? He did Started my escort project with the zetec, brought the mounts from Burtons UK, made a sump and thermo housing, but real problem was the cost of aftermaket injection, fuel pumps and ecu plus getting it tunned, was going to cost heaps. In the end i sold the motor and put in the pinto, wasted 2 years with the zetec, CA18DET would be my pick lol
sweedazz101
He started with Zetec and decided to swap to Pinto

J-W-G
So have now planned to restore the Ghia to factory as its cheaper and in theory i should get a good price for it being a ghia. So plans: Build up my pinto and use that while i also give the kent an overhaul. Respray in factory colour That is all for now.
shaneo
Stick with the 1.6 kent engine some head work bore out the bottom end and you will have a great engine that will go quite well and no cert required. Will suit the age and style of the car. You dont need to go to crazy to get good hp.
BDA780
What this man said ^^ Also with DCOE's or the like it will sound better than a Pinto.
J-W-G
True true. Thing is its knocking on nearly 400,000kms so its bound to have already had some work done to it, but ill see once i take it off the road. Im forever changing my mind on the escort. But at the moment i have a set of coilovers for the front, might have a set of rs 4 spokes coming, will be getting a antitramp kit and fab up a watts linkage for the rear, also really thinking of an antidive kit for the front. But with all of this ill need a cert anyway and i really love those retro ford BDA cam covers for the zetec....

Logo
Hey, moved to aussie sussed a 1978-1980 ford escort mk2 its apparently a two litre due to the overhead cam but was wondering if you know the engine number difference to the 2.0L pinto and the 2.0L kent engine something like VJ in the front or something? Hopefully make a new project page by the end of the week once I get it for a mint price. Also mint build and yes the vinyl roofs do give a hectic odour! http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/ford_escort_production_identification.htm Just found this, is it the high compression or low for the pinto/kent. Cheers

Cheers 2.0l kent?? As far as I know MK1 and MK2 Escort's only came in 1.1,1.3 and 1.6 Kent (crossflow), 1.6 and 2.0 Pinto, 1.6 and 1.8 BDA or 1.6 Lotus Twincam. A pinto should have a 205 if its from a 80's ford eg Sierra or it would have 200 iirc.
Logo
Ah i see it now, the 1994cc pinto TL20H OHC sweet. Cheers for that hopefully has the 2.0L pinto then.
QCADTA
it sounds like youve been busy. If youve got the budget by all means go for a zetec on quad throttle bodies with nos but the only cheap part about putting these engines in an escort is the motor itself, unless your willing to fabricate alot of stuff yourself, but for the price of building an engine like that id stick with the pinto. Good luck with the build either way.
