mixmasterlex
How's she go now?
punkoutnz
Freaken awesomely. I just got home from an excursion to Greenlane for a Primera club meet. (that's all the way from Whangaparaoa and back) and it didn't miss a beat. Boost comes on around 2300. Currently running just 6 psi, will bump that up to 12psi with an electronic boost controller soon. It's actually the first time in the entire time I've owned it that it's actually run faultlessly, lol.
Valiant
Have you done anything to your engine other than add the turbo? What sort of fuel system are you using? It looks like it has come together well.
punkoutnz
Nah engine is stock. Fuel system has a fuel pump of some sort (not sure what, but is a lot louder than my mate's stock MX5 one). Fuel injectors are RX7 jobbies and the ecu is an old school Autronic from the original conversion. Everything has been mint all week except for the alternator belt which, in spite of the bolts all being tight, has still managed to loosen itself twice. Tried some locktite on them and put some ink to mark where it sits and will see how we go from there. Aside from that, I'm so freaken over the moon about it you have no idea. It's quick, it's quiet, it handles amazingly and it goes BARRRPTSHHHH. Multiple win!
Valiant
Cool. I have a few things to get hold of yet then. Thanks.
punkoutnz
Are you looking at going the turbo route on an MX5? Bro if there's any info you're after that maybe I can help with feel free to PM me, or ask on here. I've learned a hell of a lot about these cars specifically over the last 6 months or so and there's some things I now know that would have made life a hell of a lot easier in the beginning! punkoutnz
Whoa an update! Bought myself a Gizzmo boost controller, now running .80 bar of boost (about 11.4psi) and then last week I found a nice Momo wheel for cheap so picked that up... Then this weekend I got a call from a mate, he'd found an MX5 with a broken cambelt for $500. We went to check it out with the idea of going halves and found it had a hard top to come with it so we dived at it! Brad's getting the car to use as his daily, and I got the hard top. Here's the car we scored... And here's my car with it's new hard top (that I painted black)... Still in the process of getting a new front lip (bit of a group buy taking place with the MX5 boys) and gonna look at copying some of the ideas the yanks have for some home made side skirts and rear lip. So just having a bit of fun with it now that the kinks seemed to have worked their way out. Looking forward to summer with a convertible for sure! punkoutnz
Well I've spent the last two months enjoying the crap out of this car! Put the stock Nardi wheel back in cos that momo was just too small for a car with no adjustable steering column. Painted the IC black for that extra sleeper effect, got a turbo blanket to keep under bonnet temperatures down, last weekend tinted the windows and this weekend I picked up an R style front lip for it. Here's the project I'm working on at the moment, this is the first mould of the side skirts that I'm making for it... And here, although it's dirty, it sits in it's summer guise... So it's been busy, yet not. Days like today really make one of these cars all that more awesome though!
punkoutnz
I did stuff... Manifold had a leak, took it off, welded it up. Clearly didn't spend enough time clearing out the welding spatter though. Nek minuut... A little bit managed to get into the engine so I tore the head off, cleaned that little sucker out of there, sanded the dents off the piston and put it all back together with a new turbo. Then I turned the key and crossed my fingers. Is all running good now with no exhaust leaks and no crunchy crunchy noises. Dodged a bullet there! Well, sort of. I'm still going to need to build a new engine cos I don't trust a pitted piston knocking around in a turbo car, so that's going to be the winter project ready for next summer. Chuck some forgies au bei in there and some eagle rods while I'm at it and all should be groovy. Also scored a roll bar from the lovely land of trademe so I now sport a lovely piece of scaffolding to put stickers on (stickers make everything cooler you see). I came up with this wicked idea for the interior, I know how everyone loves two tone (including me) and anything that gets rid of a bit of brown is awesome (I tried toilet duck but that shit was stuck good). So picked up some black bits of interior and did this... Next step is to do the dash as well (which I already have, just having a wicked case of cbf right now). So here's hoping I get to enjoy a few more summer months of topless cruising without having to tear into the engine bay again.
fryup
Was that your WRX thats been stolen? Ratshit luck if it is, hope you catch the pricks!
punkoutnz
Yeah bro that was my WRX. Pretty gutted eh! Dunno if I want it back though, imagine it'll be pretty buggered if they managed to get through a 5 star alarm and all the jazz to get it going. Furai
Looking nice, they seem to go well Turbo. What offset and tires are you running?
punkoutnz
15x6.5" buddyclubs. +40 offset. Tyres are RE001 205/50's. Quite sticky with that combo!
punkoutnz
Done lots of stuff, home made side skirts, new intake, been driving it around all summer while the wrx was being fixed up and just yesterday I picked up my new garage vary knockoff front lip. BOOM!
unhuman
Can't say I'm a fan of the rollover bar. With the top links bolted in one wonders how well it would hold its structural integrity in an actual rollover, but I can imagine the damage it would do to your unhelmeted skull in an non-rollover accident, regardless of how much padding is on it. punkoutnz
Hit a gymkhana yesterday, did some mad skids oi. This was my first or second run on the pan... W8Z8IodTPB8
mikuni
Looks so slippery, fun in a RWD though.
punkoutnz
Thought I'd have a bit of fun with some custom door cards and this is what I came up with, full Sunday picnic spec! Note the interior is now half black, like it should have been from the factory I reckon. Still trying to decide on what (if any) wheels I want to replace the buddyclubs with, almost tempted to go hobo spec with some rota wheels. I know they're knockoffs but they're so cheap!
