Lots of stuff you could do to help, make sure choke is sweet, make sure good spark, make sure timing is set correctly. Also the fuel could be draining out of the carb when it sits for a while and then taking a while to pump back.

The latter could be confirmed if it starts easy with some flammable starter spray as above.

hey man ,is it a auto choke or a cable operated choke ?if it an auto choke make sure its all adjusted properly.I have a 1600 escort and had major troubles adjusting the chokes till i got it right now it starts first pop took ages too get it right.

Just stab the throttle twice then hit the key on cold mornings :)

When you wind it over does it slow down as winter kills batteries.

I would check the plug gap.

How worn is the engine as one of my old girls was a hard starter as it had naf all compression but I couldn't blow it up and I could thrash it all I wanted. It eventually got so low it couldnt start at all.
