Guest WESTCORT
Did you say you owned a rs500? dont those things get to 100kph in like 2.8 seconds? my 1300 takes about 28 seconds haha i really need a new engine/escort.... i cant stand getting beaten by pizza boys at the lights
Bistro
nah i know what BDAs are but what are BDGs? BDGs are a 2lt version. With a whole new block made by cosworth i htink, and a BDA head. if you get what i mean, the end letter is just the different capacity.... Big Dave will know more no doubt. I think you can get a BDJ whick is 1100 or something... hehe, could be wrong tho. But a BDG block costs around 3000 pounds or something crazy. Jerm
ohh true.... mean cos now that i think about it i saw them ina burton catalogue i think.... .... yeah cos the BDAs are just a BDA head on normal 1600 blocks aye... BDGs must be bad ass
BigDave
Yes I used to own a RS500, thats what paid for the cars and me to get here!! Anyway to answer the other question a BDA simply means Belt Driven A series engine. As the engine developed they just added letters onto the end, working through the alphabet in about 15 different guises. The BDA started as a 1600 but of course developed upto 1800 in Mk2 RS1800 forms, there were 1100 BDJ, 2 litre BDG, and also a mental BDTE which was Turbo'd right upto 600+ bhp!! Does that answer your question? CheeRS Dave...
jinx
BDTE - was that the lunatic capri engine...?
BigDave
The BDTE was a 2 litre, from memory I belive that crazy Capri was just a teenie 1300!! But I know the one you mean, it was mental!!
jinx
it was a 1300 - was designed to fit into the existing class rules as I recall. damned cool though!

Guest WESTCORT
Didnt the old skool formula 1 cars run 1300's with like 7 bars boost?! i remember hearing sumthing crazy like that...
BigDave
old f1 cars used to be huge mate, also turbos were unheard of, they used to go mad on supercharges tho, so i suppose thats a forced induction system, pretty much similar?
si
mid 80's F1 : 1500cc engines, twin turbo, qualifying trim they used to weld the wastegates and run appox 4bar, 1300hp+ to the rears

SYKOV6
hey big dave awsome cars dude very well done. we have early 90s seirras here with twin cam heads and carbs are these a cosworth engine i think they have it cast on the cam cover. i ask because a mate is putting 1 in a mk1 cort. we were having a discussion wether it is an actual cossy engine or somthing ford did to sell more cars in nz
BigDave
It will not be a cosworth engine no mate. They only did the RS Sierra, RS Escort and Granada 24V engines in newer cars. But they have been involved in the manufacture of some head castings on a few cars, the NZ twin cam maybe one of these? What it should have in the casting is the word "CosCast". This means that these heads had some casting work done under instruction and oversight of cosworth. They even did some heads for the 16V XE Vauxhall engine fitted to Astra and Cavalier GT models if you look close. CheeRS Dave...
SYKOV6
hi dave, thanks for the info, i thought that may have been the case. still should interesting to see what it goes like . the twin cam sierra goes alot better than the old sohc. what is a set of front brakes like yours worth?. i want to upgrade the stoppers on my mk2 cort as it goes a fair bit faster with the v6 than the 1600. i was going to go to a falcon disc and caliper as i already have the falcon stud pattern. but there is quite a bit of maching required. somthing simpler would be better. cheers dave f . BigDave
I take it you mean the Mk2 here? Well the calipers cost you will no doubt know as they are pretty much off the shelf. The extra cost is in making the brakets, bells and roters and of course fitting them onto your strut of choice. No idea what they would cost here as I brought them over from the UK?? The Mk1 brakes were hand made from billet and so cost a bit more but again all done in hte uk so no idea on NZ prices mate? CheeRS Dave...
