Steering rack bush replacement

Hey all,

Had the Laurel up on the hoist yesterday about to get a wheel alignment and then the alighment technicians showed me that the steering rack bushes were stuffed.

Is it as easy to replace on a C32 Laurel as the directions for this 240sx show??

I see some of the directions on the net; people remove the whole rack. But that seems a bit extreme to me.

The 240sx rack setup looks very much the same on my Laurel.

Well its in my Oldschool Laurel, not a drift Laurel. So I figured I'd ask here.

Another How TO:

Steering Rack Bushes Installation Procedure

1. Remove all (4) bolts which secure the steering rack to the alloy cross member.

2. Remove the clips / brackets which holds the oil supply lines in front of the rack this provides you some working space.

3. The steering rack should now be loose and can be lifted upwards but will maintain its normal sitting position.

4. Remove the old bushes the best way you know how. If they are worn they should pop out easy. Lever them out with 2 screw drivers or pull out with vice grips.

5. With the old bushes removed lift the steering rack upwards and slip the bottom half of the TOP bush into position, once in position the weight of the rack should be enough to allow the bush to sit into its home position.

6. Repeat the same procedure for the front Lower bush.

7. Now all you have to do is fit the top half of the bushes into both positions and slip the metal sleeves in and bolts into position.

8. If the bushes are not sitting in home position don`t worry, this will happen once you have bolted the rack back up and tighten down.

9. Important: To avoid damaging the new bushes, please ensure that the bushes are sitting square in their respective positions before you tighten up.

10. “Tip” a smear of rubber grease helps the sleeve and or the rubber bushes slide into

position

The 3rd (third bush) refer pic (rack grommit bush ) is available from Toyota, please check yours and if there is wear/play check (by pulling back and forth on the steering rack) it would be a good idea to replace this also.

The above procedure was carried with the car up on a hoist. I guess there might be a degree of difficulty laying on you back on the carport floor doing this job but not impossible.

Here are some steps for installing the black bushes for the drivers side.

1) Remove top bracket and old bush

2) Lift up the rack and place bushes in line with the shape on the rack, with the pointy end facing the front of the car. Don't worry if there is a gap between the two bushes, as the gap will compress once the bracket is bolted down.

3) Place the bracket over the rack with the bushes

4) Place the smallest amount of thread required to hold the bracket in place, on the bolt facing towards the rear of the car (ie: not the bolt near the engine, the other one).

5) Use leverage and compress the bracket down so that the front bolt can grab the threads and tighten it up about 3-5 threads.

6) Tighten the bolts evenly and ensure that the bushes are aligned in their right positions.

Passengers side blue ring

1) Remove bracket and old bush

2) Clean surfaces with a rag

3) Place bush on the rack, with the split facing the rear end, where the two brackets separate

4) Tighten bracket evenly and to specification

5) If there is gap in the blue ring - don't worry as it is designed to have a gap there so that it can compress and clamp down. Factory bushes have this gap as well but it is harder to see as the bush and brackets are black.

Yeh, typical of people to assume that 32 will be a later model like a R32 or A32.

I'll order the new bushes now. Thanks for your motivation Kyteler :-) Hows things going down there with you and your cars these days? YOu don't happen to need a L20et rocker cover and inlet manifold do you?

lol, I know that but its just that theres not a lot of that era of Nissan on here and going by general Nissan stuff, its quite similar between models. If you're comparing it to a 240SX I thought that searching on a forum with more modern gear might get your question answered better than "just get stuck in" :P

For example, when looking at shit for my GX71 (which is pretty similar in era) I would tend to ask toyspeed before here.

Fair enough, I can understand that. Looks like a simple job for me anyway.

Rang a couple of parts places and then my main parts supplier who i deal with told me I have to get them from Nissan, so they're getting me some prices. Should be cheap enough, but knowing Nissan parts it wont be lol.

External bushings on a steering rack is hardly rocket science though, is it? Buy the parts, replace them. Pretty simple Simon met a Pieman, going to the fair.

Oh and George, nah bro. I'm not going injected anymore and even if I was, I have several intakes from 20->28 NA->Turbo, Cam covers with NISSAN OHC, NISSAN, NISSAN TURBO, etc. Cheers for the offer though.

Removing the steering rack is a piece of wees, just get a wheel alignment after for safety's sake. You could take the opportunity to obviously drain and refill it in the process (Making sure to bleed all the air from the system) and replace the rack boots if they haven't been done recently to save going through the hassle again if one of them tears. Make sure to tape up your hydraulic flares so no shit gets in them too...

I removed the one from the S12, got it rebuilt by the specialist cause I prefer to leave things like that to the pros, then reinstalled it. All up about a nights labour, and I did it on my back with the car on stands - obviously it's going to be millions easier up on a hoist
