another bluetop for the escort

i have found another bluetop engine and was thinking of possibly turboing it, what would it take for it to get a turbo working on it? would i be able to make it turbo being high compression and all? are all blue tops high compression? if not what would be some good mods to do to the motor to get some good power out of it?

Ive always wanted to see/try a high compression low boost engine.

Alot of the stuff to turbo them pops up on trademe all the time.

Hell yeah I'm in the same boat. I say why waste power/responce etc by lowering the CR. You might aswell build a pretty nice engine and with a decent CR and just run low-moderate boost.

given the right mixtures you can run almost anything....

guy on toyspeed has run sucessfully, shitloads of stock bluetops on high boost (18psi plus) with stock computer, and extra injector or somehting.

it's all about making sure you

a) don't thrash the bejesus out of it, esp when cold

B) run the correct timing and mixtures, not to mention decent fuel.

I'd happily run around all day on 9:1 compression and huge boost.

high comp 4agzes are like 9:1 or more. perhaps 9.4? not 100%

yes, turboing a bluetop is possible. im fairly sure all bluetops are the same compression though.

4agzes are either 8.0 (older models) or 8.9 (later models) compression ratios. if you are wanting a decent reliable engine, go with a 4agze. otherwise if you're just wanting to have a bit of fun with low boost, stick with stock everything.

just get a manifold made up, stick a turbo on, plumb up a stock 4agze intercooler then plumb your oil lines up and you should be sweet. there are all sorts of other little things which crop up when doing this though too (all of which i am not totally sure on).

I do know that map sensored 4ages (like bluetops) dont like boost, so you need to put a 1 way valve somewhere along the line or something like that. if you want to go for it, it is definitely possible. but i wouldn't count on it lasting long :lol:

i was going to go down the same track as you but in the end decided theres no way I would be able to "just run it on low boost", eventually i would want to put more in so am running with a 4agze block instead for reliability.

yes u can turbo a bluetop. but as the map sensor cant read boost u can only run low boost and have to retard the static timing, but like corrupt sed go 4agze factory pistons can handle about 20psi stock ecu can read up to 1 bar of boost. a guy on toyspeed who now has a 330kw levin, had a stock gze engien and ecu with a extra injecotor controller to fuel the 18psi and ran a 12sec 1/4mile in a fwd levin it put down about 200kw atw

theres a key word in there that id pay close attention too.

dont bother with starting with a 4agze, for the same cost you can buy a 20v and rebuild it with 4agze pistons. then you have a brand new engine.

on a stock bluetop you really dont want anymore than 12ish psi for any kind of long term reliability
