Engine Misfires

at the moment the eski is misfiring after about 4500rpm and cant really get near 6500 cause the tacho needle just bounches around. its not in the best shape of tune but i changed the dizzy to an electronic one with less mechanical advance so ive made up for that with static advance.

ive tried everything i can think of to solve it, a new bosch gt40 coil, i tried reducing the timing a little which seemed to help it a bit but not much theres nothing shorting out in the engine bay im pretty sure ive just got standard plugs with 8mm leads and im kind of running out of ideas as to what it could be. what i noticed last nite though was that it doesnt misfire as much and seems much better when its a cold nite. i know all engines tend to run better at night since the air is more dense but i dont know if this points to a problem since it doesnt misfire as much when cold. ie the mixture gets leaner and it runs better so its set too rich at the moment or whatever .

ive reset the gap in the dizzy many times without any help so im really stuck now.

i ran a wire from the fusebox to give the 12v the dizzy needs and thus bypassing the ballast wire as i was supposed to aswell when adding the electronic dizzy

any help on where to look next would be great

You have your exhaust all fitted and theres no leaks? Only saying because when my exhaust broke the other weekend and I had no back pressure the engine would rev till about 4 and then the needle would just bounce around like you said and it wouldnt go past 4000rpm.

Perhaps the standard leads and plugs aren't making enough spark?

No manifold leaks intake or exhaust?

Are all your earths in good condition?

I don't know a lot about Escort engines, but is the valve clearance adjustable? It's possible you have a tight tappet or something causing a valve to not seal properly. Unlikely but gotta float all the ideas.

Try the carb first, strip it down, clean with CRC Carb Kleen (farkin good shit) and reassemble.

I feel your pain. My KP has a miss under light load at cruising speed, it's got me fucked eh. Tried absolutely everything.

vacuum advance wasnt working, replaced that, didnt solve prob. rebuilt the carb when i rebuilt the engine like a year ago so that should be causing any problems although it is a shitty carb that likes to fall apart (32/32 1300gt carb)

put a new 2inch system with 4-1 headers on as far as i know its not leaking much apart from a slight leak at 1st cylinder but when i put the gasket on to being with and it was all sealed it was still missing.

all earths are sweet im pretty sure.

yep valve gaps are adjustable and i havent checked them in a while so should probly check those but i doubt its them since i did them not so long ago.

not sure on the type of gauge but i put a rev counter dash in recently and it show signs of missing aswell and you can actually feel the misfires.

have tried iridium tipped greddy racing plugs they made no difference mite have been worse.

checked spark plug gap tried making it smaller to make it more stable at high revs to no avail.

theres not much vacuum at idle but im pretty sure thats thanks to my cam which has big duration, dont think the inlet manifold is leaking anywhere but not sure how to check

To check manifold leaks, get a sqeezy bottle with petrol or something similar and squeeze a bit of fluid around the manifold gaskets etc.

Will bubble if it's leaking.

Waste of valuable gas.

Use CRC ina can. just spray alot around the manifold seals. itll show leaks

Gas = cheaper than CRC lol.

Hey,

One problem i had when i put a sports dash in my esky was, The new cable i ran off the Coil Negative was arcing behind the tacho, wich resulted in MAD missfiring and absolutly no power. Make sure that cable is only touching the right terminal behind the dash.

Also with the 8mm leads. I got some from Repco (8mm silicone) they only lasted me 3 months. The heat from the exhaust manifold broke down the silicone causing them to split and have very weak spark. Wich resulted in me having the same problem your having. Check your leads for any cracks.

It might pay to check if fuel pump is working and nothing blocked. Just unplug the fuel inlet off the carb, have something to catch the fuel in. There should be 2 healthy squirts every revolution. Well thats what i can remember from my haynes manual.
