yoeddynz
I'm putting new bushes allround on the escort then I wanna fit new shocks. trouble is I dont know how uprated to go? I may in the future put an extra leaf in the back so I'm looking at some KYB's which are supposedly 35% uprated. Would that be too much dampening? they are gas filled and about $75 each. who has experiance with fitting new shocks to eskys out there and what works on a near standard car? and whats the rating of standard front mk2 springs. How much should I go to without making it ride like a skateboard? I just want it to feel a bit tighter and roll a little less, with at the most an inch drop. cheers for any advice alex
CaMpylobacter
king lows in front, extra leaf in rear or peraps van rear springs? reset properly, nolathane bushes all round, bigger front sway (mk2 stuff fit?) chuck a sway on the rear, kyb shocks all round. she'll be good
Snoozin
Yeah I was about to say, look at the sway bars first if it's roll you want to combat. Gotta be something easily available for the front, if not, go the double swaybar route (cheap etc). Flag nolathane bushes in the front, well IMO anyway, I found they made the ride too harsh, felt everything thorugh the wheel. KYB's have a pretty good rep, I've got Monroe GT Gas in the Starlet and I'm pretty happy with them as well, stay away from the Monroe Original shocks, they're rubbish. davidian
i got Gabriels in the back, pedders front you can go king standard height, they will be stiffer than std. or king lows as you dont really notice the drop much at all. keep it looking stdish man
Toucan
Definately kyb shocks, best shocks for the price. For springs, Kings are generally too hard from what I've learnt, I only hear good things about Lovells springs Thats what I'm going to use once I get around to it

Gaz
The burton mag will tell you what rate spring to buy.

KYB's going in the front anyways. Bilstein ftw.... the ones in the front of the Alfa have lasted the distance, no leakage as yet and they've done some km's...... Toucan
Monroes should be left for falcons and commodores, kybs are far superior. Dont skimp out on shocks, they make such a huge difference to the car, definately go all the way and get kybs
yoeddynz
I fit all the bushes in the back this afternoon- all came out and went in ok I'll fit the front ones tomorrow morning but keep the old ones in case like alfaholic says they'll make my teeth chatter. I'll get the KYBs. Checked the stock dampers today and they felt ok but not a lot of compression dampening. And theres enough thread left on U bolts to fit another leaf. If i fit another leaf the ride height will go up right?
CaMpylobacter
yes but if you're sending them to a spring merchant then they'll be able to reset the ride height of them..

Toucan
Just out of intrest, how much did your bushes set you back? are they nolathanes and did you just by a complete set?
yoeddynz
I bought the full set except the swaybar mounts at front for $210 from Chamberlain suspension in Ch Ch. I'm doing front ones this morning- I've just discovered that my mate I bought car off had fit mk2 struts without swapping to mk2 rack...so the mk1 tierod ends are too small and the tapers were not even close to fitting!. The ends were being held in place by the nuts and the rubber boots were squashed up tight(hence no rattles). Bloody hell- no wonder the car was wandering in the straight ahead!!! Really glad I had grabbed the rack from the mk2 doner car!
peteretep
remember that when you lower the car, your U bolts still have to have at least 20mm more thread after the nut, i was told by snells springs
davidian
thats sweet, u usually get like 100mm just about
yoeddynz
theres about 8-10 mm showing on bolts- which would leave a couple of mms with another leaf on- is that not enough and why?
