trunk-rattlin
well i backed the esky out yesterday and noticed the charge light not go off.........we were going for a 30min drive and we got about a kilometer down the road and it had still not gone out. (this is at night), so drove back home and got out the silver thing that you plug the red and black wires into. do u call that a voltmeter or what? anyway, at the battery there was only 11.70V. so we popped the hood and the fanbelt was still one one peice. wobled the plug thing going to the back of the alternater just on the chance that it mite be loose. which it wasnt. tested the battery again................same. Then out of randomness i reved it to about 6k and the light went out!!!!!!. Now it was getting 13.(x)volts!! so off we went. as we were leaving our destination, it did the same thing and had to rev it up to 6....... any ideas, it didnt use to do this....... Toucan
Hope you let it warm up before you revved it to 6 Mine stays on till i rev past about 1800. Check all the main power connections and things, look for lose wires; battery, voltage regulator, coil, fuses, alternator, starter?
trunk-rattlin
yes it was warm!! where is this voltage regulator? and it starts ok so cant be starter motor.............. btw, sometimes there is this white shit on the dipstic just on that part of the dipstic where there is the bend, and a solid bit of metal.......its like foam shit and only such a small amount. any ideas? kyteler
It could just be your alternator (read: VR) dying, revving it up to 6 will be spinning it fast enough for it to generate the required amount of power. I can't recall whether VR's are Internal or External in the Escort so you'll have to figure that out yourself, if it's Internal (inside the alternator) you might be better off grabbing another alternator for fuckall somewhere, if you can, otherwise, find out what model number the VR is and go into Appco or some such, they'll sort you out. GNR
white stuff on dip stick i know that like when, water i think it is, mixes with the air it goes a browny white colour, so it could be that, i know my car has it when u take the cap of to put more oil in there is lots up there, just an idea
trunk-rattlin
yea, is it a badthing? wouldnt you see it a lot more if water was mixed with air?
Toucan
Isnt the voltage regualator the little rectangle thing on the right hand side of the engine bay? It has a big fat positive wire going into it...
Guest escort_boy
the smae thing happend on mine. the light would turn off to high revs and got higher and higher. then my alternator died. so i just went to a ford place an dpiked up a recoed alternator wit a warrenty and chuked it in and she works sweet now
mex
sounds like ya allternator has had it, cost me $160 (not an escort one but i thinks its pretty much a std price)to get mine recond, but after i did that i found out i could have brought a brand new chrome plated one from roadrunner starters for $180, so depending on what you want to spend they might be worth a call
Guest escort_boy
i got a recond one for $
Guest WESTCORT
same thing happened to me, until it got worse and i couldnt rev it enough to make the red light go off in fear of blowing my engine up, so i took the alternator off, opened it up and cleaned it up and gave the thingy that does the shit a light sand with fine ass paper, works a dream now, cept like sum1 else sed it doesnt go off till i tap the accelerator
big tymer
the white stuff is water in the oil as in moisture maybe try venting your rocker cover abit more you can change your bushes in your alternator ya self for real cheap should only be about $90 cos all/most alternator are the same
two_days_late
its most likely your alternator brushes are worn out. they cost about $10 to replace. just got to pull your alternator out, unscrew the plastic cover, inscrew the top bit inside and they just fall out. you can buy new ones from repco. i replaced some on an escort just recently and they are super easy to do. white creamy stuff on ya dipstick usually means blown head gasket.. trunk-rattlin
oooooooo shiiiiiittttttttt if it is blown, is there any other tell tale signs of having a blown gasket.... i dont think it is, i will do a radiator pressure test one day.... and coudnt water on the dstick just be from moisture going down frun the handle part of it?
two_days_late
haha that wasn't even meant to sound dirty. pretty funny now that i think about it tho. yea it could just mean condensation ran down the dipstick, but if your head gasket blows internally then that's what will happen. if its blown id drain the oil out of that bad boy right now and buy some engine flush oil. then replace the head gasket, flush the engine with the oil then might as well do a radiator flush at the same time. then chuck some new oil in and youll be away. if your head gaskets blown you'll loose compression so your car will generally run like shit. and eventually die
