well i backed the esky out yesterday and noticed the charge light not go off.........we were going for a 30min drive and we got about a kilometer down the road and it had still not gone out. (this is at night), so drove back home and got out the silver thing that you plug the red and black wires into. do u call that a voltmeter or what? anyway, at the battery there was only 11.70V. so we popped the hood and the fanbelt was still one one peice. wobled the plug thing going to the back of the alternater just on the chance that it mite be loose. which it wasnt. tested the battery again................same. Then out of randomness i reved it to about 6k and the light went out!!!!!!. Now it was getting 13.(x)volts!!

so off we went.

as we were leaving our destination, it did the same thing and had to rev it up to 6.......

any ideas, it didnt use to do this.......

It could just be your alternator (read: VR) dying, revving it up to 6 will be spinning it fast enough for it to generate the required amount of power.

I can't recall whether VR's are Internal or External in the Escort so you'll have to figure that out yourself, if it's Internal (inside the alternator) you might be better off grabbing another alternator for fuckall somewhere, if you can, otherwise, find out what model number the VR is and go into Appco or some such, they'll sort you out.

sounds like ya allternator has had it, cost me $160 (not an escort one but i thinks its pretty much a std price)to get mine recond, but after i did that i found out i could have brought a brand new chrome plated one from roadrunner starters for $180, so depending on what you want to spend they might be worth a call :D

Guest WESTCORT

same thing happened to me, until it got worse and i couldnt rev it enough to make the red light go off in fear of blowing my engine up, so i took the alternator off, opened it up and cleaned it up and gave the thingy that does the shit a light sand with fine ass paper, works a dream now, cept like sum1 else sed it doesnt go off till i tap the accelerator

its most likely your alternator brushes are worn out. they cost about $10 to replace. just got to pull your alternator out, unscrew the plastic cover, inscrew the top bit inside and they just fall out. you can buy new ones from repco. i replaced some on an escort just recently and they are super easy to do.

white creamy stuff on ya dipstick usually means blown head gasket..

haha that wasn't even meant to sound dirty. pretty funny now that i think about it tho.

yea it could just mean condensation ran down the dipstick, but if your head gasket blows internally then that's what will happen. if its blown id drain the oil out of that bad boy right now and buy some engine flush oil. then replace the head gasket, flush the engine with the oil then might as well do a radiator flush at the same time. then chuck some new oil in and youll be away.

if your head gaskets blown you'll loose compression so your car will generally run like shit. and eventually die :D
