jaymz
I have just got a instrument cluster (dashboard) from a mk2 sport to put in my 1300 GL i have pulled the old one out and there is a speedo cable easy enough and a loom with a big clip on it about 8 wires which i think is for all the warning light etc and then there's another loom that i went to the fuel and temp gauge, the new dash doesn't have a space for the small loom, it does but thats for the speedo, do i havve to rewire the fuel and temp gauge? cheers
Toucan
This was the first thing I did when I got my escort, feels like a long time ago now. I know that I had the one with the big fuel an temp gauges on the left where the tacho is on the sport cluster, so I swapped them but then found that the wires didnt line up. I had to trace all the wires back to see what they did before I re-ordered them. As for the small loom, that came with the cluster when I bought it. One thing that is annoying when you do this, the new fuel gauge is about half the size of the old one, so it wont read correctly. I fill up my tank and the needle rises up off the gauge and then when I get down to about half a tank it falls onto the scale, from there on it drops really quick so make sure you dont run outa gas Yea just look at the old loom and write down what colour wire does what, and then line it up with the new cluster and see what needs changing... Hope that made some kind of sense
Guest WESTCORT
cant be as bad as mine, when i fill up it goes to just a little over half way on my gauge hahaha ive got the 1300 gl ones... duno how far down it goes though, ive never let it go below what it says is empty on the fear that it might be empty and ill suck all the shit out of the bottom of my tank through my engine.... BigDave
You may also need to fit a high pressure oil line for that guage??
jaymz
You may also need to fit a high pressure oil line for that guage?? how come?
Toucan
Yea how come you say that?
BigDave
I mean if your old one does not have an oil pressure guage. They are not electricly operated and work from an oil line from your block to the guage. If it already had one then you are of course laughing! Toucan
I always thought the balck was hard to see at night and was thinking about doing it white. If I did it white I'd have 3 problems; a) I'd be a ricer I know I'd screw it up c) Painting it is kinda going against my whole "keeping it original idea" Red would look cool though. Mr.Mk1
Its piss easy 2 do, once you take the instrument 'box' out, unscrew all the srews and take everything apart, you are left with a plastic piece - the bit you see. Prime it first if u have some spray lyin about, makes it easier, and matt paints would be more suitable so as not 2 glare 2 much. Yea I thought I was bein a bit ricer, but everything can be put back 2 original as i have 2 of everything.
Toucan
Taking it apart is easy, Ive done that heaps, I was meaning the hard bit would be painting the actual gauge without ruining the numbers, or in my case, putting new numbers on after I'd painted it white
Mr.Mk1
Ooooo you mean the actual gagues! Naaa that might b a mish. You may be able to buy a decal set at some auto shop that would stick on ova the painted bits? or you could get some white gagues from the U.K at mad cost. jinx
Why not strip it, scan the face onto the computer and then make all the custom dials you ever want... Get a sticker sheet from a stationery store to print onto. You could stuff around making all the possible colour combinations etc with ease and then transfer it onto your dials. zep
What I've heard of people doing, is scanning them in and modifying them on photoshop. http://www.hotgemini.com/viewtopic.php?t=19063
Jerm
or if you wanted to be hard out... scan them do the artowrk and get it screenprinted onto the plastic.... new or old
Toucan
Yea I never would of thought of using a scanner, I dont have one but I can easily borrow one sometime... Its probably one of the things I'll never get around to doing though dammit
Jerm
whynot just scan it at a friends house.. and take the file... instead of taking the whole scanner
