I've seen inside an Escort motor with flat top pistons. I think 85mm VW pistons were the ones to use in the past. Someone probably makes a new specific set now. The head was an early chambered head that had had a very extensive rework to increase the chamber design and depth. 1100 pistons are unavailable now? And make the compression very high? From memory. I'd keep the 3.5 to 1 diff myself.

Toyota ones often leak around the top there is a shaped o ring and an o ring on the throttle shaft. It is quite easy to replace them both, just mark where the throttle lever is on the shaft before you pull it appart. You can get the parts from diesel repair shops they cost about $10 from memory

I've just mocked my calipers up at the moment, I think I will have a few clearance issues though. You could make up a crossmember to mount the shocks like a Mk1 wagon has.

Try making some turrets for your shocks. Then you can move them in away from your brakes. Mk2 Escort ones are cheap and a good length.
