  1. Re 8's all round, fronts are shp 8's, not much different to look at. Need some slip on spacers.
  2. Never found the spacers man Car is looking great. Nice job with the radiator, just recored one of mine ($220) but the Silvia one must be a heap lighter? Mine is now running 8's all round and tracks abit but not annoyingly so, need to reco my centre drag link also. Keep it up
  3. Thanks I'll pass that along. Finding someone even interested in working on them is difficult, a few light jabs won't hurt him.
  4. An old mate is moving to Wellington tomorrow, there are a few small jobs his mini needs done that we couldn't get done today and he will need a trusted old car mechanic for its ongoing maintainence. He will be working central and is not sure where he will eventually live so area is not so important. Anyone suggest a garage that enjoys working on this old stuff?
  5. Beatson Motors is the best in my view, I say avoid places that sell tyres. Its on Colombo St. in Edgeware.
  6. We used to use ex Lancers as backpacker rental cars,(a long time ago) one of the things we did was fit 5 speeds to them all. So yes it will bolt in.
  7. Not sure Glen, last one I saw a customer do was a total waste of money (a Safari lol). It was around 4 grand and that buys a lot of petrol. I'd buy a diesel model, some might buy a GDI model either way work out how many kms the Pajero has to do to recoup your investment. ie not worth doing if you do 20,000kms and sell it.
  8. Have had a few mass oil spillages, last one from a Landrover trans right across our shared carpark when the hose popped off the radiator. Pour petrol on it, use an old broom to spread it around and then spread sawdust or similar over it to absord. Push the pile of sawdust back over and over and it will be mint. A dirty old workshop I once worked in used this method on the old uneven concrete.
  9. Why not repair the one you have? If you keep throwing away repairable gearboxes there will be none left when you really need a replacement. Gonna assume its narrow block so I believe a Sigma one will fit.
  10. Never heard of the dude or the mag, haha. Thinking of getting one of the Starions out for this to fly the Mitsubishi flag, all good?
  11. There will be one for sale in Chch earlish next year, in similar condition to the ones shown on the previous page. Which is completely retored mechanically with original paint and interior which is also in top condition. As a guide the Hillman went for $3500 and the Sunbeam for $5500, which is nothing like what gets spent on them. For example we rebuilt the motor, gearbox and brakes ready for WOF and sold it, now he has fully reconditioned them. (which is hurt as its a waste of a gasket set, quailty ring set etc)
  12. Get a paint pen and make your own marks. Otherwise the crank mark is obvious but the cam one can be confusing. They use the same pulley for 1e/2e with different timing holes but its clearly marked. I use a split pin or similar through the (2e) hole in the cam pulley and it lines up with a hole in the casting. You cannot see this very well and its done by feel. Really should only need to do it this way if the belt has broken or you have the motor apart. Way easier to create your own marks.
  13. Think the crash is him. We have an expensive Impworks sport engine under the bench at work, it burnt/leaked oil, fumed and was a nightmare, must have got 400kms tops from it. Built one from parts for a few hunderd dollars and its still good now after all these years. We get similar stories from alot of people, which is sad as its put alot of fans off these sweet wee cars.
  14. And I wouldn't have sold it to him haha. I'm sure Bob will be interested in seeing one of his old Coupes again, he is currently doing a Hillman Imp that we started on but got too busy to finish. A 1 owner Chch new rego on hold find, as usual it seems with Imps around 70000miles head gasket blown left in shed example.
  15. Yeah, was it you I sold it to? Didn't realise Bob built your one, must be before I knew him. He does small Fords too, his work is amazing.
  16. No but he builds the nice ones. Sold those two for him last year I think.
  17. A couple of sold customer Imps The hidden blue one is the hack.
  18. Hi, as i said in the other thread I know a few people with them. My boss has a Mk1 no spec model in real good nick (white) and a $161 trade me special Mk 2 we got back on the road for not much and is a bit of a hack (blue). One of our customers retores them and sells them to museums. Might try and post some pics when I get time. Here is one: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=17940&start=240 Halfway down page, also has the 930cc big block Just had a Sunbeam show up this morning, a young guy is slowly doing it up, for steering gaitor boot so sure to be fun.
  19. Re guages: speedo is driven by cable so it must have stopped/jammed and snapped cable. Oil pressure guage is the same, runs oil from engine no need for wires. Have you checked fuses? There will be no need to rewire the whole car. Re gearbox: you have to remove engine so I understand the $2000 quote, even fitting a second hand one would be over a grand with possibly unknown results. Edit: Was probably me who quoted that in the first place
  20. I think its still on there for fitting purposes but there is another one for it in case. Its not ready for driving just yet but we couldn't resist firing the engine up. What was wrong with your one?
  21. Jo Bedford? Must be the same one, he said it was from a Jag. Started it up last weekend, ran well.
  22. Sounds like a fwd engine? If so you will need a gearbox and to alter the manifolds and plumbing to suit. You will need to make mounts for both engine and gearbox and most likely change the diff to a stronger item. You will also need brake and suspension work. (driving one today they can hardly handle the original engine) There will be other unforseen dramas as well (read $$) After that you will have a smaller engine than original and I would miss the torque the old girl. If you know all that and are keen get into it, it will certainly be easier with a complete car to grab all the needed parts.
  23. Where is the heater tap? If its under the bonnet you'll be able to check if its operating easily. No water loss or leaks? An air lock in the system could cause it, so could a blown head gasket. If all looks good you could try removing the hoses and reverse flushing the heater with the garden hose.
