Yep, so what is the recommended norm' when purchasing a late model Lux? (or any car really) Demand 2 keys? Or can you simply get them cut like the older ones? Or is there some buyer beware sorta shit with modern car keys etc? I seem to remember something about somebody being held over a barrel about keys being need to be bought from the dealer (ching!) or something. Ask for 2 keys? What. Ta.

I am pretty familiar with mucking around with the say 1984 through to the 1998 models of Lux. The LN65's and the LN106 shaped trucks. They are susceptible to being pinched and they are easy to take. Most people who own these types of trucks are aware of this point and modify their ownership habits to minimize the risk of it occurring. Well normal and on to it cunts do - the others are inviting shit to happen on their watch.
What I don't know (but would like to know) is what the later model Luxers have in the way of minimizing being stolen. They must have something due to the propensity of the earlier ones to being flogged. I am talking about the 2006 onwards shaped ones. The ones with the 1KD and ECU's running them. Are there built in security measures put into the ECU by Toyota to make things harder for a crook? I don't know much about ECU powered motor vehicles but thought I might want to own one one day - possibly a depreciating Lux, lol. Anyone?

Couldn't help myself. Thought about it all weekend. Told myself waste of money, don't really need it. Then made the mistake of watching TIG Welding 101 et.al on Youtube and that was it - the voice from the laptop told me I in fact, did need one! And that I needed one as soon as could be had. So this morning, me and my LN106 shot down to Tradezone and plunked down the dosh. Hummed and harrrrd about what bottle size and thought fuck it, get another Eziswap G. Hummed and harrrrd between the Viper180 and this and thought fuck it also. Spending alot of my dosh now - whats some extra?
And this is where I am. Need a trolley and have decided to cobble one together from stuff lying around but will need to buy some wheels. The ones on TM look flimsy and I've seen what full G sized bottle does to them. Oh yeah, and did not get a foot pedal. I'm not unpacking this thing for a while yet as I have got other stuff on the go. But yeah, chur. Something to look forward to.

3 ac/dc TIG Welders. All seemingly in cooee of each other but I am not a TIG welder in the slightest so don't have an appreciation for the specs. I want to be a TIG welder though. Not a guru but enough to be able to use it satisfactorily for small scale fabrication of stuff for me ie. puke cans, alum brackets and header work etc. Plus I want to be able to generally fuck around - normal shit. I want something with pulse. I am shopping in and around the 1.5 - 2.5k (give or take) region not counting bottle purchase. Comments please.

Geez, look at the rear over hang this model has in the arse. Look at how longgg the wheelbase is. A lot more slippery looking than its predecessors too ... and its still reasonably narrow. The extra length of cab would make for a way more comfortable fit up of driver and cage. Make a good drag truck me thinks.

no idea apart from that.
but have everything except crank pulley.
maybe should sell as a kit.
Here's what I know about the LN56/57's and power steering - if you can find a 2wd one, you're doing well because my understanding is they never came out with it. I stand to be corrected on this though but the power steered 2wd 56/57's I've come across have all got it by bodgy-ing an LN85 box on. Good luck getting all the bolts to fit. They look to be the same but they are not. Same with the steering arm idler and, same with the bottom arms between the two series. The LN85 was beefier than the 56/57 trucks. Just like the 147's are beefier than the 85's etc.

All that weight but through design - the Hilux rear axle bearings see very little of it directly. Try that too many times on a 9" semi floater and see how far you get. The most common Hilux diff bearing size is the same size as the big Fords largest offering. 80mm for the Luxer and 3.150" for the Blue Oval.

@Muncie Mate, are you still working in the field that fucks around with these things? If so, question - I've noticed that when a 1/2" torque wrench (tw) is rated above around the 150ft/lbs mark the price goes up. I need something 1/2" in the 200ft/lbs range and see that 3/4" tw's that are priced near the same as the 150ft 1/2" ones do this easily. I was wondering if using a 3/4 to 1/2" adapter on a 3/4" tw would still work alright for measuring torque in general use. It should aye?
I was/am looking at something from Teng Tools around the $320 range. Does this level of spend get me something that is ok? Is Teng Tools tw's ok do you know? I'm currently using a Warren Brown deflecting beam and its been very good for/to me but tops out at 150. Haha, can I machine out that slot a little more and call it 200? :)) Cheers bro.
You do work with these things aye? Or did I read one of your posts wrong.

Hi @nels two questions ... you say don't weld or don't weld all(?) of the rear tub to the inside of the rear fender. Just so I picture it right - the tub is welded front, rear and to the chassis rail but sits near as flush to, and is contoured to the inside of the rear guard - but not permanently fixed to it. Yeah? If not, can you put my understanding right mate? Also, what do you use to seal (is it sealed?) the tub to the inside of the guard if it is floating there? Ta.
And, when you decided to stretch the rear wheel arch - was there any method to the madness? Or just what looks good/some space to get the wheel off. Cheers man. Ta.

Yeah man, there is always an upside to things to for someone ... let him get his jollies fucking as many as he can get - just makes the remaining ones worth more. Gawd, look at that example of @johnnyfive's 106. Farkin cool! I am needing to get a full on side view pic of my 106 pooch so solid axle aficionados can receive a double dose of Lux-porn.

Re those rear caliper brackets your mate made ... are they a 2 piece deal ie steel onto the diff housing then with a hunk of machined alloy to adapt the caliper to the steel plate? Or full alloy. Cheers.

2900? My 5l regularly goes up to 3900.. Specially doing big loads uphill.
Nah man, I baby my truck in terms of rpm. I might go a little more sometimes, but on the whole I treat it like I paid for it - so look after. That red truck in the pic looks a little rough but mechanically its in great nic. It does not leak nothing, nada, zilch. The engine is a rusty looking dry thing. Years ago I fitted a new brass/copper radiator to it along with a new battery. Its reliable as fuck and does the biz at 2900, lol! Chur bro.

The above comment nails it for me and pretty much well is my experience of towing with 3L powered 106's. Don't get me wrong, an LN106 with nothing in the back or nothing uber heavy will go well on the open road. Just you won't be overtaking anything much but will be able to do the speed limit pretty much well anywhere. They handle like shit though if you have big wheels. IMHO 31's are probably the max you can go before you get into cunt' handling territory. I've got one with 32's and it needs to be driven. it was totally different when I was running OEM style 31's. By that i mean you don't take your hands off the steering wheel and you are conscious of undulating roads and camber . Steering a beam axle is totally not like driving a car with IFS. These trucks need to be handled or you will be off the side of the road. Good thing about them is ya mrs probably won't go near it. The smell, the dirt, the height and the tractor like handling characteristics generally keep the fairer sex away from your baby.
My red truck sits and sounds happy at around 2900rpm's. I don't take it above 3000rpm. They are all done by then bro. This equates to around the 100kmh mark for it. I fucking love the sound of my 3L in full song, hahaha!! One wire start and absolutely nothing that cannot be fixed in shed by a normal bloke. Parts are plentiful and they don't break much. If I get down to 2nd gear when towing then I am keeping it around the 2700 mark and not revving the shit out of it. It seems happy there unlike the pricks following me.
I was in a scrap yard one time waiting to go onto the bridge. There were two lines that went into one at the bridge. It was hot and I was standing outside my truck. Parked next door was this late model new looking pickup. Shiny as fuck and with no noticeable manuka creases. I was actually marveling how much bigger the later stuff was compared to my red pigger. The owner was standing next to it and must have mistaken me looking at his truck as me wishing I owned one. Like fuck. After some small talk about how great a deal he got his truck for and how well it goes ... I asked him if he could hear that sound. He said he couldn't and what sound was i talking about? I said listen as i leaned over ... its coming from your truck. He listened, but couldn't then I told him it was the sound of depreciation coming from his truck, lol! He gave me that nervous sorta laugh that really means 'get fucked you cheeky darkie' and climbed back into his truck. Haha!!
I'd have one if one was given to me but I'd never stump up with the sorta dosh being asked for them. They are a rip I reckon. And they break. I gotta bro that works/owns a commercial wreckers and they fucking break expensively. Fuck that. Around the late 90's was the last of the trucks that were totally mechanical and easy for joe blow to fix. That's the sort I like ... cheap and easy to fix, run and maintain.
Get one for you while you still can.
Ps. I know this has got nothing to do with towing but ummm ... fuck it - love these dirty little underdogs.

Yeah mate, just like that. Sorry to hear about the bro's Luxer. I rarely leave this thing unattended if it leaves the property. These things have always been popular with thieves and/or foreign parts exporters. Like you we live rural. But just because we're out of sight from the general populace - I don't take things for granted. No way bro. I've been into these dirty old Luxers for years and know they are cool and popular. Locked sheds, situational awareness and dogs is how we roll. Best of luck with the bro's Lux @igor Chur.

@moparmuppet hey mate, haha, both got 106's and both into MoParts. Cool! (mind you my lonng association with the brand maybe drawing to a close soon - I might be waka jumping) No, I was asking about what security measures the newer Hiluxs incorporate into their make up to combat being unlawfully taken. But yeah, like you - I keep my solid axles in a locked shed also and am selective on where I leave them parked when in use.
