  1. You can't just get rid of it for free at the dump anymore? We can in Christchurch. Just make an oil burner to keep your garage warm
  2. I feel like most wof shops wouldn't even want to touch your car if you bring it in all ratted out, the dents will just be asking for trouble
  3. I feel punked, it's just a bmw meet, Edit: wrong day
  4. Could be head gasket leaking in to one of the cylinders. Any sign of milkshake if you pull the dipstick or look under the oil fill cap?
  5. Surely cars are self clearancing? Every other machine is.
  6. Only really two situations that new oil might potentially be worse A) detergent oil in unfiltered system can cause extra wear as contaminants won't fall to the bottom modern low zinc oils might cause problems on some camshafts, but pretty unlikely
  7. Made a desk for the office, still need to put some corner caps on it and I feel like it needs some more visual stuff on the sides
  8. My brother melted the brush holders on both of his Hikoki battery grinders, not even particularly heavy use - he has about 5 corded grinders for the heavy stuff.
  9. Different brand, Makita only does 18V and 40V separately. Gotta be careful with those dual voltage batteries
  10. If it is still rated as 5Ah then it is twice the capacity of the old 18V 5Ah https://www.thetoolshed.co.nz/product/17092-makita-xgt-lithium-ion-battery-40v-5ah So doing the exact same work it should last twice as long. Also costs a bit more than twice as much as the old batteries
  11. That's a bit shit. I'm happy with the 18v gear so far, no complaints at all. I guess the saw can get a little top heavy and if you don't place it down right it will fall over, but apart from that it is great. They seem to have worked all the bugs out of the 680 in the last few years, no rattles or problems with guards retracting. I guess the 40V (actually 36 but they love marketing wank) is still quite new and hasn't had all the bugs worked out yet. But yeah, my Ryobi gear was all 2015/16 stuff and was actually quite good for what it was, the new ryobi stuff doesn't look half as well built
  12. Amazing how this has come out in the end. It looks like putting the new engine in was well worth the effort and the stress of the crap situation ended up being only a blip in the grand scheme.
  13. Bit late of an entry to this discussion, but about two weeks ago I replaced my Ryobi stuff with Makita - batteries felt like they were slowly going south after 6 years. I spent a fair bit of time shopping around online to figure best price matches. M10 Ferrymead has a really smart system, where they automatically have in-store deals that match the lowest available prices so I ended up going to Papanui to get them to price beat competitors on most of the stuff. I bought the DLX2416TX2 kit from Bunnings: Hammer drill, impact, 3x 5Ah batteries and charger. The third battery came via the redemption promotion and only took like a week to arrive. I could have gotten the 2131T kit for $100 less with price beat but they would have been even weaker tools and only 2x batteries. Those kit tools definitely aren't the gruntiest, but I didn't need all out power. Remaining tools I got decent kit and managed to wrangle out a decent price beat on them all, saving about $250 for the lot. One thing of note is the kit I got from bunnings is advertised as having a rapid charger but it actually included a standard charger. I'm not too fussed about this, but have emailed Makita anyway, maybe I will hear something back.
  14. I couldn't figure out if it was going to be last weekend or the weekend before because I'm stupid/the main event thread didn't have dates in it. Otherwise I would have come
  15. Must be getting to be almost 20 years too late to be screwing around with these old things cost effectively for making power (reliability will also need to be a part of the cost effectiveness calculation). Best off either keeping it standard (with manual conversion) or throwing a K11 micra engine in and keeping a few of them spare. Would probably only really need to make a bellhousing adapter and engine mounts.
  16. I keep forgetting that this isn't going in to the Echo...
  17. Are all die grinders crazy air hungry? I got a Ryobi one and it is rated for something like 4 cfm at 90psi. My compressor, tested at 9.3cfm at 90psi, can't keep up with the bastard at all
  18. I feel like your sump idea is over thinking it. Just get a machinist or use a die grinder to lop the sides of those drain holes out so the oil can flow sideways into the sump.
  19. VIRM is pretty clear that guards aren't included. That rust on the seam of the chassis is a bit concerning though. Either way you should scrap that car, you can drop it off at my house and I will get rid of it for free for you.

    4age hunting

No IAC will make it shit on a cold morning. You might be able to free up the old valve by giving it a thorough cleaning, or just partially blocking a port off so it doesn't give so much extra air when cold.
  21. Karl sold me a dodgy second hand laptop like 5 years ago and it is still trucking along at full power.
  22. Old Barry sold Safe R Exhausts to a couple of young roughians a few years ago, they didn't seem to be particularly on to it at the time but they may be better now? Edit: Google reviews seems to reckon they are still as legit as ever
  23. Nah battery isn't quite enough. You can hear your ignition through your AM radio. Bit of potting around at risk components is a legit idea, probably already done by Toyota though. We cut our crystal failure rate after ultrasonic welding by thirty just by potting them first Also, I'm not an electrical engineer so don't take everything I say for gospel
