MTM
Hey guys, Pretty much no next to nothing about cars and engines but I'm getting there slowly. My 4 speed gearbox leaks oil from time to time which I've noticed over the past 2 months on the driveway. I was getting quite a crunch in reverse but otherwise all other gears were fine. Now over past few days it could be my imagination but my gears just seem too easy to push around and everything feels a bit loose/smooth. Should I be concerned about a fried clutch or gearbox coming up? Thanks.
peteretep
It will be fine. You can see a clutch needing to be done a while before it needs to happen becuase you will first have to adjust it to its limit( unless previous owner already done that haha). I think lots of the gearboxes crunch into reverse but it will last years like that. Maybe you just learned to live with the gearbox better. That or something catastrophic might be waiting to happen haha
crustywhip
Slap some banana skins in there.
MTM
Haha sweet man, yea someone said they are pretty sturdy! I'll just keep rolling with it until something blows up or conbusts into flames.
pe-arce
They're not too sturdy. I popped 1st gear in 2 of them before mine came off the road. It could feel loose if the gear stick is unscrewing itself.. Check that it's screwed in tight and has the tabs to stop it unscrewing. I had mine come off in my hand one day while I was nailing it down a passing lane. Was real unexpected.
downtrail
Putting gearbox into 2nd before selecting reverse will slow the box enough to get into reverse without crunching.
igor
My Falcon crunches when going into reverse but if I put it in 5th first then slam it straight back into reverse it's quiet as. I've forgotten what Escort shift pattern looks like but try what downtrail suggests. You'll know when the clutch is dying because it will start to slip like a wet bitch on steep hills and you will find that when you put your foot down the engine speed will increase but the vehicle speed will not. This may or may not be accompanied by the foul stench of burnt clutch lining.
ajg193
Just wait 2-3 seconds after pushing clutch in before putting into reverse. It needs time for the gears to stop spinning before engagement as reverse is unsynchronized. If it doesn't want to go in then, let clutch out and repeat (the gear will have just stopped in the wrong spot).
downtrail
^^ thats what putting into gear does stops input shaft spinning either way its not a major worry you will never need to load reverse up to the max unless your into roll backs lol
