SOHC
I have a few old gearboxes in my shed and I found some of them have become rusty inside from condensation. I was going to fill them to the top with ATF for storage as I have a lot of it, dose anyone know if ATF is yellow metal safe?
browndog
should be no problem, a lot of manual gearboxes run on ATF. I would go so as far to say ANY oil will be fine in there.
BLIZZO
I only run gl4 designation stuff in my triumph as I have read that several places say gl5 and 6 is real bad for the bronze synchros
SOHC
Even GL5 oil witch is yellow metal safe can leave a deposit that flakes off and damages bronze. I just want to store some spare gearboxes, but would like to compleatley submerge the gears in oil.
browndog
Hmmm, interesting. I would have thought any deposits left would be from the oil oxidising, which is only going to happen with some heat and air present. I can't see how that would happen with the gearboxes brimmed, and obviously not being run like that? Although you will probably have to tip them on the side to do that, as the filler will be half way up the side.

There top loaders. I bit the bullet and filled them up with gl4 and I will keep them some where I can turn them every few days to keep all the gears oiled. the Essex gearbox I had in storage has all of the tops of the gears badley pitted. I should have turned it over every now and then.
