kritta
best way i1ve found to do gearbox oil....take out filler plug on the side of gearbox, take out the shifter, and fill the gearbox from shifter housing, untill oil starts to flow out of filler on side of gearbox.....with the car LEVEL... Yeah this is the best way to do it. Some cars dont have drain bungs on the side though. I remember once I ran a long tube to a funnel on the roof of the car so there was enough gravity force to push the gearbox oil in to the side bung. It was a column shift where you obviously couldnt fill it through the shifter. In regards to timing, find a workshop manual and see what timing they are supposed to run standard, it will be a value of degrees at a certain RPM (eg. 8deg BTDC at 750rpm). Hook up your timing light, disconnect any vacuum advance hoses and rotate your dizzy until that setting is achieved. The factory setting is normally a good starting point, but you can tweak it a little if it doesnt sound right. If the above doesn't make sense to you then take it to any workshop. Atleast they will get it right and its only gonna take them half an hour or less if you specify you only want the timing set (not a full carb tune etc). Doesn't work with an Escort box though since you cant fill them through the shifter. To drain take out the drive shaft and unbolt the gearbox crossmember from the car, lower the box as far as the engine mounts will twist. Fill it using a hose with a funnel stuck in one end run down the engine bay into the tunnel and yeah fill till the oil starts coming out of the filler hole in the side of the box. For a T9 if its in ok condition use 1.9L of 75W90 semi-synthetic oil.
