automatic to manual - ford cortina what is required ?

Well my automatic gearbox has given up completely on my mk2 cortina. Has anyone out there done the conversation from auto column shift to a manual floor change and particularly what parts are needed to do so?

I'm sorta venturing into the unknown here so any guidance would be appreciated

Never done a Cortina or column shift for that matter.

Generally require

Manual transmission

Clutch

Flywheel

Master Cylinder (not required if cable operated, which my old mk4 was)

Slave Cylinder (not required if cable operated, which my old mk4 was)

Hydraulic lines from slave to cylinder (not required if cable operated; as above)

Manual transmission sub frame

Clutch and brake pedals

Possibly a manual transmission driveshaft

Possible a different centre console to suit manual

A hole to be added for gear shifter seeing as it is column shift, may generically already have one plated up but I'm unsure.

thanks for that will get a parts list started, does anyone know if I'll need a different speedo cable?

And another thing I was concerned about was that the starter motor is on the other side so will I need a manual starter motor or will they be the same and just requiring abit of wiring moved?

hmmmm will have to have a look when i pick up from auto trans place. they got the box out an gona see if its repairable and what sorta costs involved.its a shame to because it drives forward nicely just the reverse crapped itself, he reckons the band is completely worn out. ifs a huge cost to repair i may go manual instead to save myself from future problems. also a sierra repower is not out of the question at this stage but thinking if I go down that road il need a daily for a while which will slow things down

also, send a pm to [i500gt] on here (Karl), hes in christchurch and is a cortina nut (I got my mk2 of him) so will no doubt have the bits you need and will likely be able to tell you what you need as well. he may even have a spare auto box you could bolt in for the easiest solution

edit, this guy memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1291

they should be the same, although doesnt the starter motor bolt to the motor as well? (i could be wrong).

I think they are the same, its a rather generic starter used in a lot of Brit cars.

And they don't bolt to the engine, just three bolts to the bellhousing.

fark Just got charged 415$ for 5 hours labor for auto trans company to take out my box open it up an diagnose the fault.then tried to sell me a 1900 rebuild. I could practically convert to a sr20de for that sorta money.

very upsetting as now my car doesn't even drive at all an effectively is useless

gutted

yeap thats the next option, he quoted me 1200$ to do that just about spat coffee in his face, hes a good mechanic but no way am I paying him 1200 to replace a box haha. I can do it myself but I didn't want to have the hassle but looks like il need to now :( .I mean shit I was quoted 400$ to change a 4wd box in a wrx sti, thats a much harder box to change than a automatic cortina box.Abit pissed I even brought it to him really I know he would have done a good job an all but 400$ to remove a box an open it up.....

The way I see it those auto trans a crap an cant handle any sorta of power or load, so logically it'd be better to waste money converting it to a manual than replacing or rebuilding the auto. But then if im converting it to manual the cost would be fairly high. And if im going to spend any big amounts of money on it I may as well begin the conversion I want to do in the future. plus the 1600 crossflow should fetch me 500 off my costs as well :)

Was having a look on trademe an those sr20de packages are only 1200-2000$

More difficult than its worth :D lol. Nah its really not that bad. You will need quite a few bits so not recommended unless you have a whole complete setup (on the parts car style).

Steering box needs to be changed to manual one(or at least the mounting point for the linkages(easy)

pedal box needs to come out and be modified to suit new pedals(easy)

Linkages have to cut off an redone (tricky)

hole drilled in firewall for clutch cylinder (easy if you have the tools)

Thats as far as I am currently. I've been pretty lazy with mine but I hope to get it sorted in the next month or 2 :P

you will also need the obvious parts like clutch setup, flywheel, gearbox, manual pedal box, linkages an brackets, steering box, driveshaft, starter motor, manual steering surround with manual column shift stick

Think thats all.

If I were to attempt it again I would probably try a 4speed escort box. Annoying to say now but it would've been easier and quicker. So much fiddly crap with linkages

If I were to attempt it again I would probably try a mk1/mk2 cortina floor change box. and not an escort box as they require input shaft modification. Annoying to say now but it would've been easier and quicker. So much fiddly crap with linkages

I'm surprised you didn't buy that proper mk2 cortina floor change box I sourced for you

Other thing you would require is spiggot bearing for crankshaft, assuming that the crank is already drilled for a bearing...otherwise the crank could need machining.

Also need to locate the neutral/park cutout switch wiring to bypass.

Wont the Cortina be a Borg Warner 35 transmission?

Assume that it would be the same as a early Hillman Hunter and a number of other British cars, and thats probably the reason the parts are getting dearer to repair the box...BW35s havent been in fashion for a few years.

Might be worth looking at going to the later Hunter auto - BW45, and get an extra gear as well
