yoeddynz
I put the elford turbo assembly in roughly where it will go in my Viva. I'm new to the world of hairdryers so I need some advice. First thing I had to change was the outlet position of the turbo- it now points up and I will have to make a connecting tube from it to the inlet manifold. I can put a hole next to light behind grill as air feed which is handy. There is enough room for a pod type filter. Lots of room behind turbo for exhaust down pipe. Need to plumb in a waste gate in there too. Secondly- the SU carb will be at a slight angle. Does this matter? Are they fussy about that? Will it affect the running- I don't think it should as the float bowl is under the carb but levels shouldn't affect the jet or needle? Anyone know? And lastly- the turbo has a slight amount of play in the shaft. Its about maybe 0.5 mm up and down. Its an old aireserch unit ; type 8317? T3 flange. Its just oil feed to solid bearings. I don't know whether the slack is taken up when it has oil fed under pressure. I'm taking it to a exhaust specialist friend tomorrow to show him but any ideas on how slop there should be? If it needs a rebuild then at this point in time I will just put a carb on and do turbo fit later on. How much do rebuilds cost- ie say new bearings, shaft etc? Do most places that service turbos do the whole lot as a matter of course or can they just do enough? Any to be recommended in top of the south? Is this an old turbo that I will struggle to get parts for?
kpr
small bit of up and down play is normal. long as it has minimal end float should be fine. other thing to remember is oil return is gravity only, so feed in the top, and out the bottom with no restrictions to sump
Kelvin
The HIF SU's like the one you have are sweet to run on a bit of an angle tilting back, have been useing them like that on minis for years the only hard part is finding the right needle to suit whatever engine set up your useing it on. As for how much rebilding the turbo will cost how long is a peace of string? It all depends were you go what you want done and how easy it is for them to find parts for, the last one I had done was a T28 off a rover 220 gti and with a new compressor cover and 360 degre thust washer I think it cost me about $
mjrstar
should be pretty sweet.. chuck a bit of fresh oil down the turbo oil feed and see how it feels, chances are it's dry as a nun's nasty.. I'd say you'll be needing an epic dash pot spring for that hif44 given the amount of suck the rotary should be providing. Is throttle cable positioning going to be an issue?? yoeddynz
cool. There's no end float. Just a little wiggle up and down. I.ll put some oil in it and see how it feels. Yeah was going to feed outlet into a small canister above oil line then into sump so no restriction. The whole lot is off a series 2 rx7. Made by elford in england. But its exhaust manifold puts it right into brake master on a viva so making another. Throttle linkage ok. Will start tomorrow on making flanges. How much of an angle can the carb be? 15degrees?
