mk2escort
Well tonight I went to start my escort (1.3 standard) and wouldnt start all dash lights ect where working but wouldnt even turn over. It just makes a single clunking noise when i turn key. I dont really know much about cars but am assuming the starter motors died so before i go buy another one is there anything else i should check?? thanks
My name is Russell
hit it with a hammer could be jammed. OR, remove starter motor before you buy a new one give it a good clean, put it on the ground with your foot on it and put power to it to see if it goes. the toothed bit should kick out. Beaver
check earth and battery terminals. make sure stater motor is getting enough juice. try giving it a jumpstart, will tell you if its the starter motor or not. sounds like its just not getting enough juice though
Hemi
yea what he siad ... it should make at least a audible tick from the solinoid . hit both..the brushes in the starter after a million years of use are prob running low and full of shit . EvoBilly
trying not to ask a dumb question here but are you sure the battery isn't flat as it dosn't take alot of power for dash lights to go takes a bit more for it to wind over?

If the starter's attempting to work, then everything will go dim/out on the dash if the battery's low. Stick the headlights on as well to be sure. cammmy
Is it an auto? Run it through to D then back to Park if so. Had this with the trump a few times before conversion, was the inhibitor switch not realising it was in fact in park.

cammmy
the trump did make a noise like it was trying to start for a split second then stop. After that it wouldn't make any noise at all until you ran the stick through and back to park
