MichaelJFox
The auto box in my merc is stuffed. Looking to get it replaced, got a spare here. It just misses gears and or stays in first. Gotta take your foot off the accel peddle to let it change. What kinda price would I be looking at to get it swapped at a decent mechanics place? Cheers. Hemi
a shitload , do it yourself will take less then a day . staying in gear and not shifting unless foot is removed is probably somthing to do with the clutch packs or the bands i reckon , which arnt cheap
bubblegoose
my mate changed the box in his c180 in 7 hours and hes fucking useless! its not a massive job if you have some decent tools
MichaelJFox
Mongol, so you think it's not the gearbox? Shit. (If you could post some info about what you think it is, and a rough guess on price) It's a 1974 250. She seams to gear back alright. But she won't gear up unless foot is lifted and then it takes a minute. I look like a failing manual driver all the time
kyteler
Not just fluid? By bands he means inside the box, btw. I'd be careful with a spare box too. Lack of use and if it's been dry of fluid, it might be in a similar/the same condition. MichaelJFox
The spare was leaking oil out this morning when I removed it from the boot. Has been dormant for a year + though. The fluid seams alright when I checked but I'll load it up anyway.
kyteler
Check the fluid on the auto box with the car idling.
MichaelJFox
Hmm seams to still be low after adding 300ml. Just brought this car today. Blah, gonna run to gassie for some more oil. Will keep posted.
MichaelJFox
Booted a litre in it. Seams to still be doing it. If I keep my foot on gas it misses and just revs. EDIT: Is it new box time?
MichaelJFox
It's also twin carb. And seams to skip a beat every now and then(sometimes quite a stutter), with a bit of white smoke at start up and a bluer smoke when revving. Nothing too heavy. Hope I haven't scored a supreme lemon. Having no job and no money... anymore. Haha. Haven't had a good look at everything yet. Would like to know what you guys think so I don't miss anything. Unclejake
Hmmm. It could possibly be a split pressure modulating diaphram on the gearbox. That could explain the white smoke. The box (if it is the one I am thinking of) has a hard steel vacuum tube from the inlet manifold down to a removable alloy cover on the driver's side of the transmission. Once the fluid is drained you can take that cover off and have a look at the rubber diaphram. The other more likely cause of the white smoke is a leaking brake M/C into the brake vacuum servo and your torque convertor is stuffed. Mercedes automatic transmissions are shit and always have been. Twin carb 180.xxx motors are also a cunt UJ probably knows a bit better, he's knowledged in some ways of the silver arrow Silver Star you Son of the rabbit bird loving egg
MichaelJFox
Ah yea. I had some help from a merc mechanic over the phone. Drained the oil, cleaned all filters etc with kero. Must have only had half a litre of oil in it. The dick must have been running it dry before I got it. Now it's got three litres in it. Has started gearing up on its own accord, which is sweet. Does seam to gear up at a super high rpm though. Still smoking quite a bit, I'll look into those things you suggested. Also looking at the twin carbs, they sit differently, apparently this shouldnt happen?

MichaelJFox
The little 'fins' that move, when they're sitting doing nothing one is closed, one is maybe half a cm open.
Unclejake
This is going to get quote worthy I reckon You might be refering to the electric choke butterflys. They can be adjusted with a wee linkage that hangs off each bi-metal scroll to get them evenly set. Make certain both are opening when the engine is warm though otherwise there is little point in adjusting them. They (like everything on those carbs) are trouble
MichaelJFox
Hmmm damn. Should have looked into things before I brought her and sold my trusty subaru. You can't replace them with something more sturdy? Seeing I may not need to shell out hard to get the auto box changed anymore.
Unclejake
You can't replace them with something more sturdy? You are going to need to work with what you have got.My advice? Find the oldest Mercedes mechanic alive in your area and get him to sort out the carbs before he dies. Don't fuck with them or you will be sorry. lowlancer
And then sell the thing
MichaelJFox
This must be why most of the ones you still see have different engines in them. Not because It's an easy conversion, because its a necessary conversion. I've seen Nissan Diesels and a Holden 308 (Which is currently on TM)
MichaelJFox
And then sell the thing She's cost me all I got lol. It'll have to be my ride for awhile.
