Front shocks and brake pads

Hey guys, two questions -

I want to replace the front shocks in my Eterna but notice the replacements are KYB inserts. Has anyone had experience replacing just the inserts of a factory strut? Is it really as easy as the leaflet supplied suggests? Or would I need some specialist tools and machinery?

Also, I'm wanting to replace the front brake pads with a decent compound for when I take my car on the track. Has anyone had experience with EBC Greenstuff brake pads before? I can get a front set for $70 which seems good - or should I go with a more reknown brake pad like Bendix Metalking's or Mintex Racing pads?

Cheers

Easy as boe. The only cunty part can be getting the strut nut at the top off, still, pretty simple all up. Generally they come with replacements for those, which works out well because sometimes you have to fuck 'em to get 'em off.

I've heard good and bad about eebc.

minis go well on them

pugs and bmws don't.

I'm running Mintex 1144. costs jsut over hundy for a custom set. you nmay be able to get them for your car off the shelf......

dusty as, but kind to rotors (metal kings aren't, and are poos in comparison anyway)

seem to hold off fade hard too...

Green stuff might not be man enough for your tank  , generally the green stuff are recommended as a fast road pad for up to mid size vehicles, they also tend to wear out very quickly when pushed. I've heard tales of lasting only 6 laps of manfield, before there was literally nothing left. For the money they are prob worth a shot, being that std metal ones are around $50 (from memory and assuming they are the same as starion)

I had a set of black stuff ( entry level ebc) in my old mazda, they were pretty reasonable but did wear out fast.

As for the struts, they are cake, messy though, as the std ones are a wet cartridge and oil tends to go everywhere. If i recall correctly the starion ones reuse the factory top caps so try not to destroy them, they come out reasonably easy, use a set of stilsons to crack them then use a big spanner or even sharpened screwdriver in one of the slots under the hex to wind them out, they are a really fine thread and spend their life soaked in oil so once they are cracked they spin easy.

Who did your Mintexes?

through BNT. was way cheaper than race brakes.

fronts were mint. rears had to have about a mil linished off them to fit. weird things they are. standard style rear pads would be sweet though.. they don't get that hot, and mines slightly over braked on the rea now hah

Fuck, so $100 odd for all four - way cheaper than I expected. Just a PITA trying to explain to sloooooow wrecker why I want scummy old pads with my big new calipers

seriously dude the frodos? or whatever thay sell at super cheap are fucking good pads check around on the net and you wont hear much bad things. BNT in hams just send there pads off to another firm to do mintex so come for a yarn and we can go direct to them for cheaper.

Ferodo Zero's? Really? I don't rate them that high - they are an alright pad but not the best. I had them on the old Galant and they were quite dusty. Also Supercheap don't do ferodos for the Starion, but can get some decent Remsa pads for the same price.

Whose the firm BNT get them from? Might be keen to do that boes

Cheap and choice pads for occasional track use = Ferodo GP2

For hard race use I have tried Blackhawk, Metalkings, Mintex and some other one I can't remember. Would like to try Padgid soon I guess as I have new calipers so need new pads (again)

Any previous experience with greenstuff should really come with a date for when they were tried. I ran greenstuff front pads on my old GTIR, the first set lasted 3 months if that, but felt good. Went through a lot of other pads and was convinced to try the greenstuffs again, as the formula had been changed considerably. I did, they lasted about a year and were the best standard fitment pads I used (Mintex 1144s were as good but sooo fucking noisy).

This was on a car that was 1250kg, had notoriously bad brakes and over 300bhp, so they were generally worked very hard.
