Bolt Strength

we buy heaps of stuff from them through my work, EDL is also good for bolts

I didnt really read exactly what your doing but could you not buy some rod and get it threaded, or even buy 12mm threaded rod and cut it to suit?

im sure i can get a better bolt off the shelf somewhere, will ring these cunts tomorrow and see.

Forget your bolt man, an unbalanced pulley on the end of the crank is going to cause nothing but drama.

At the very least take what you've fabricated yourself to a engineer to get it balanced.

ok, seems to be a good idea, can anyone reccomend some good cunt/s in auckland which would be able to balance it?

rang a industrial bolt/nut place today, they said they the highest tensile they have is 8.8 and they are used on buildings etc so the bolt i got will be fine.

A place I worked at used RAT (Rotational Alignment Technologies) 0800 254 4648.

From memory it was something to do with long shafts, but probably involved balancing too. Then they stopped getting them balanced/aligned at all, and nothing broke  Wasn't going as fast as a crank pulley, but.

Might be worth ringing, but as ^^^ said, there's probably one that specialises in automotive applications.

hmm im one of them tight ass cunts, someplace prob gonna wanna charge me a pocket load to even look at my arc'd together pulleys

if it is out of balance what are gonna be the side effects?

Hey,

Another problem you may have is eccentricity. You mentioned you lined them Up but get it checked out. With bad ececntricity you'll get bad vibes when running the belt as it will be tightening, loosening, tightening, loosening .... every time it turns.

took the pulley to this good cunt at a engine/driveshaft balanacing place he reckoned it would be sweet as balance wise, and everything looked good on it to be able to use it. he also said that balancing of this pulley would be the least of my worries, as the rest of the engine isnt probably in balance to start with. then he noticed a crack beside the keyway on the factory pulley and suggested that i got another couple of pulleys and redone them this time maybe using a mig welder for a tidier weld. thats what ill be doing once i get the setup running mint.

You wana be careful welding cast have to use the right electrodes or wire if you mig it.

when i arc'd these ones together i used mild steel electrodes, and its mint for strength, so probably just mild steel mig wire?? im gonna be borrowing my mates mig so will have to get the right wire etc

Um I think you will find that mild steel rods are not really the best for cast you really need a high nickel rod for that sorta thing. Also should pre heat it but then again I've done a few things without pre heat and they've been sweet. As for mig flux cored wire's have a high nickel content.

the sierras powersteerign used a single v belt, im using a micro v (5) belt as thats what the charger has on it. its all gravy anyway, spoken to an engine specialist he reckoned the custom pulley i have made up will be fine to run and the weld looks to have worked well between cast and steel. will be remaking the exact same pulley as this one has a crack in the cast item which i was not aware of  spent hours on it ffs.

the weld may have worked but probably left the cast pullet a bit brittle. best way to weld would be to braze it with oxy/acet with a slightly carbonised flame, i think thats what its called from memory. someone correct me if im wrong. :)
