Which Auto trans ?

R100

Recommended Posts

Looking at fitting an auto to a project im building.

I need a good strong box capible of handeling 400 + HP It also needs to have a removable bellhousing.

Ive been looking at Turbo 350 transmissions, but they all seen to come with the bellhousing incorperated.

Powerglide is another option but id like more than 2 gears.

C4 transmissions are again another option, who knows whats better ?

What type has the most avalible parts, whats cheaper to rebuild, whats stronger etc etc.

This may not be the site to ask about them, but im not sure where else to go.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I know plenty of people putting 400bhp though a C4.. they are fuckin strong. But yeah you could go a C6.. but there's a weight penality. But good for 600odd

+ heaps of aftermarket bits for these boxes. Whats it going in?

What its going in is top secret at the moment, but after a few calculations i need a box to handle 600-800 HP and between 1600 to 2000 NM of torque. Im not familia with a C6 trans, but i have heard of a C4, ive also been told a C4 can be modified to handle alot of power.

People have also been saying a Power glide is a better option.

I will be fitting a 2000 to 3000 rpm stall converter. Car will be used for the street.

You are building a ferocious Diesel arent you!

2000 rpm stall converter? for street use, just a word of warning about that, if you are doing 60kph at 1800rpm with a 2000rpm stall converter the convertor 'slip' will be constantly kicking in and out and you will burn it out REALLY quickly.

Something to take into account, if you are planning on using said beast for driving around town/open road and not just flying up the 1/4 then you really need to get talking to an automatic tranny specialist, not just a preformance shop dude.

Anyway, I know bugger all about it - I just happened to be reading about how stall convertors work etc and that was something I came across and thought you might like/need to know....

c4\c6 \power glide best choices c4 nice and lite bolt on bell housing \small phyisical size and able to be modded to handle insane hp. same with c6 just abit bigger and heavier. P/G good and well proven behind mega hp v8s still will require a fair amount of mods for your usage. hi stalls are sweet on the street they dont slip below the said stall speed. they only slip when u mash the loud pedal then they slip till the engine gets to its powerband and hit hard. i had a 3000 stall in the corty and it was sweet. good fun at lights. DONT buy a second hand one or and off the shelf item they should always be custom made for your engine mods/gearbox ratios and diff ratio. torque convertor engineering in pukekohe did mine worked perfectly and about 500 bucks. the only thing u need is a good aftermarket trans cooler as they do run hotter than stock
