Josh Posted April 26, 2006 Share Posted April 26, 2006 OK so couple weeks back I was coming back from kaikoura and was bout half hour into the trip and looked at my volts gauge and it seemed unusually low, was on 10 or something, so I turned of the head unit which didnt make any difference, but did it anyway and the volts keep on dropping slowly as i kept driving back from kaikoura, then I got to seddon and it was on the verge of getting dark so driving through seddon I put my lights on and the volts dropped right off to about 8 and the car started like spluttering along and I had no power from the accelerator, so I switched them back off and it went fine again, but the volts were still dropping very low slowly and slowly as I drove back, so I went like a bat outa hel to get home before it went completly dark since I couldnt turn my lights on and just got home in time, then when I got home i pulled into the driveway, and the car stopped as I rolled up, tried turning it back on but there was nothing there but that ticking sound and the volt gauge needle wasnt moving when I turned the key (lowest it goes is 8 Yea so anyway anyone got any ideas whats going on? RT Posted April 26, 2006 Share Posted April 26, 2006 Pinto alternators come in 4 sorts... the first 3 look identical. except the plastic rear housing.. black, red, and blue. The black ones are the worst and the most common. Then red and blue respectively. So when u go to the wreckers or whatever make sure you find a blue backed one as it is more powerful and more up to the job of running modern equiptment. Alternatively.. (no pun intended) you can modify a late model jap one to suit. But that is a cunt. The fourth option is finding an alt like that I used. Its a german bosh item that came on late model sierras.
