thminiman
does any one here have any experience or pros and cons of alloy or race radiators. the one on the 1300 mini engine i got is on the way out with a fair bit of rust along the bottom so im just wondering if it would be a worthwile upgrade to get a custom alloy radiator made up before i drop the engine in. thanks, any recomendations would be much appreciated
CaMpylobacter
I modded a top and bottom bracket to fit a land crabradiator into mine. never got round to putting it in though.... gotta change brackets so that it doesnt foul the firewall side of it at the bottom, or else they fracture slightly... of course you'd have to play iwth the shroud asa well so a fan would fit... they're quite a bit bigger. also, try getting hold of a 4 blade mk1 mini steel fan. they're noisy as fuck but far better for cooling, and actually unlock a couple of horse, compared to the 11/17 blade jobby. bit hard to find but they're around........ chur
Gaz
You mean a custom radiator right. They are very costly. I am going to get one when the escort is finally finished. Round $1000 bucks tho.
thminiman
shit, thats a bit more than i was expecting, i was thinking 500-700 or so, ill probably look into it but it might end up being a non event. are there any negatives (other than the price) compared to a standard radiator? TygerTung
Ever thought of using an old intercooler as a radiator?
thminiman
ive heard of a few people doing this... does it have to be a certain type of intercooler or is it basically just what fits.
ProZac
Maybe a cut down truck core? I would have thought the ratio of rows to fins would be off tho... same reason you wouldn't use an aircon rad as an intercooler. Interesting idea tho.... Gaz
it would need modding. Maybe 700ish if you got a small one.
RT
pros: light, they look awesome, don't rust... and they are light cons: alloy doesn't disappate heat quite as well as brass. But because most of them are custom built they are usually better sized or more cores anyway.
Guest kris
Radiator man told me that the alloy ones are more likely to crack and he sees a lot of heatbreak. Light weight isn't that important, as it's the water inside that weighs the most. Bling is good. I was told 5-600 for an alloy rad. 1000 seems high, must be very special. Gaz
Price would probably depend on how many cores and size
SYKOV6
pros: light, they look awesome, don't rust... and they are light cons: alloy doesn't disappate heat quite as well as brass. But because most of them are custom built they are usually better sized or more cores anyway. i was told that aluminium dissipates heat better than the old brass type thats why most new cars have them and they can be smaller/thinner and do the same job. eg v6 commy rads are only 2 cores thick as opposed to an old falcon one that is twice as thick to cool essentually the same. work mate just got a 4 core ally fitted to his rx 3 cost $650 for rad + $ 300 to make brakets and alter filler neck top suit. Gaz
whoa $300 for making brackets.
mikuni
He basically paid $900. Like saying you can have the radiator for $400, but I won't give it to you unless I can install it and charge $500 for that
SYKOV6
nah rad shop wouldnt/couldnt to the welding/engineering side of it so had to go to an engineer. most of the cost was in fabing a new filler neck to suit the rx cause the rad in a 3 is under the front panel and because its a 4 core and about 80mm thick it had to go as far fwd as poss to clear the front pulley
