zep
Ok, I have figured that it is my diff that is the problem. I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. It's making a horrible wirring sound on gas, no idea why. Does anyone have any clues before I go and take the car to somewhere horrendously expenaive? deaf_rattle
try replacing the diff oil first. and failing that new diff needed.
deaf_rattle
oh, why would you take it somewhere expensive? if you want someone to have a listen just let me know. also i can help with pulling the diff out and putting replacement one in if you can get hold of one. But id change fluid first, might sort it out
mkcortina
are you sure its the diff. I think i had the same thing i replaced the dif and found it wasnt that. when you apply the gas it makes the noise and then when you take your foot off it seems to make less noise. is that correct? i found that it was the universal joint on the drive shaft. half the bearing was missing. zep
Deaf Rattle: I topped up the oil, should I try and replace it all? I would be quite keen for you to listen, are you in Auckland? I can replace it myself, its just that this is a rare as fuck diff and I will never find a direct replacement in NZ. mkcortina: That's right. When I jack up the rear and go to listen to it, its soo loud that it sounds like it's comming from everywhere, but I'm pretty sure it was the diff housing. Is it possible to do some kind of hilux conversion in which you only swap the head and maybe the torque tube?

zep
Sweet, where exactly is the universal? My dif is quite 'diff'erent (hahahah) to an escort diff, they dont have torque tubes, do they?
Jerm
dude your universal joint it where the driveshaft joins in the middle...
mkcortina
to check if its the universal joint get under the car and try and turn the drive shaft buy hand if the shaft moves more than the dif head then most likely or joint is fucked. deaf_rattle
the bottom plug in most cases is magnetic, so any shavings should be stuck to that
SYKOV6
by the noise he said its making i would think you might b able to see the damage to the bearings if that is the prob

Leebo3
hey leon does ya diff have a cover on the back like a hat? What do u mean by this SYKOV6?
Pushrod
say if you were looking at the back of your car and you bent over to see the back of the axle and diff housing you would see a cover that looks kind of like a hat that you can take off. But you will no see that on your escort
zep
Ive taken the hat off, and there are no metal filings in there. What do you mean by the drive shaft moving more than the diff head?
mkcortina
its hard to explain hold the part of the diff that bolts to the drive shaft in 1 hand then with the other hand try turning the drive shaft and see if there is any play in it. hope that helps
