Jerm
My mate recently bought a wagon that is in nice tidy condition... Won't start though.... Turns over sweet... its getting fuel...and sparks all the ignition seems to be sweet... but we get nothing.. it wierd should at least hear at least one of the cylinders igniting? Probably easier just to drop an engine in cos this one looks a mess... looking for a 1300 Xflow which runs well.. Any thoughts? Cheers Jerm

kyteler
If you're getting fuel AND spark, have you tried the advancing or retarding the timing, perhaps it's just too far out of whack.
Pushrod
yep I think kyteler maybe right I had the same prob on a MK1 corty just turned out the timing was way out of whack
Jerm
yeah i thought that to but i tried it... briefly... because the dizzy only turns a max of less than 180 degrees i think and i tried it at almost both extremities and aroudn the middle i thought that should be ok shouldn't it? Guest Jamezuu
Take a spark plug out of one cylinder put ya finger in the hole and wind it over a couple of times, if theres compression it you will feel it if not then its escaping. If its not compressing try get a hold of a leakage tester and then you can pin point where its escaping.
kyteler
^^ what he said. But also, are the leads going to the right cylinders? ie. is it in the right firing order, because if it's sending spark to a cylinder that isn't getting fuel or compression at that stage then you'll also be getting nowhere. Also, with the dizzy, I can't recall my Escort too well but can the dizzy be put on backwards? if so, maybe it WAS on backwards and thusly no matter what you did with the timing adjustment, you were always going to be wrong. Just another thought or two.
Toucan
Yea what Kyteler said. When I got my engine the dizzy was 180 degrees out, ie was put on backwards. In which case you can just swap the leads round rather than fiddle with the dizzy. But by the sounds of it the dizzy has been moved around and you cant remember how it was anyway. Jerm
yeha i checked the leads .. that was the first thing i did ... and when he bought it the dizzy was off.. but i installed it according to the haynes manual.... pointed the vacuum advance thing to the back of the car and pointing te rotor at number 2 inlet.. then when you push it down the rotor moves and points perpindicular to the block.... i thought that was sweet...... maybe the actual contents of the dizzy has been put together wrong? it looked ok to me though... RT
Quite possible the coil, those standard lucas models are fuckin shit. Get a MSD blaster and fire some decent spark in there.
