need some advice .... am getting some low cobra springs... they are speced to lower the car 25-40mm ... great use that info is.. but the question i have is will it be ok to get them compressed a bit? or will they ride like shit? cos i no compressed standard springs are shit but.. these ones because theyare lower etc should have a higher spring rate right? ...which means they shouldn't be as bad.... am i right? co si want to get the eskie as low as it can go without having shit handling.. i have had the arches flared a bit so hopefully it won't rub.... and i'm getting new shocks all round...

Cant agree mare mate, its good to go low if you are going on asphalt type tracks with no bumps. But anything more than that and you have to be careful as it will completely destroy your cars handeling. Also as mentioned, you wont be able to go anywhere!

hmmm I think if I remember right they were about $250+gst that was for the front of a MK2 1600 sport that I planned to do a pinto converion on

As for spring rates I spoke to a few people in the know told them what I was doing and what the car was going to be used for and went from there looking back they may have been a wee bit hard

I have a problem with understeer in my esky, have heard a few people say they have the same problem. What the most effective but not to costly way to get round this, I was thinking of cutting the sway bars off another esky and make up a bracket so there ends up being double sway bars and then putting stiffer springs in the back

Im jealous  All you guys with your wide tires... I only have 155's on my standard rims.

Even with my small tires it has the heaviest steering in the world, it didnt help that I put a smaller steering wheel on either.

How heavy is your steering with 195/205's???

Jinx - Is the offset right with most Saab wheels? cause some Audi's and VW's have 4*108 and I thought of getting some wheels off one of these but then I thought that they would most likely have a FWD offset :?

Also Roller bearing Strut tops, how much are they worth? are they a bolt on sort of thing or do they require a bit more work? never heard much about them before so feel free to share your knowledge

buy them.

they will fit (check offset first though...)

Offset i'm not sure on, i do have full specs on the various wheels that will fit an escort but don't actually know the std escort (or capri) offset. Audi are between 35-42mm ofset with a 57mm counterbore (centre hole).

Is there anywhere I can post this stuff so people can download it?

Check these out as well - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 069851.htm

The roller bearing strut tops I've used are from a GQ galant (suits small hole escorts only - 78 onwards?). To fit them you will need to turn down your shock rod a millimeter or two and make a spacer to go under the top nut (they are a lower strut top so the escort/capri struts are then too long and need this).

You will also have to file the three mounting bolt holes slightly and the centre hole also needs to be adjusted to fit. It is a very easy job (provided someone can make the spacers) and is one of the best mods to do to an escort.

You should really get the shocks professionally modded (i used an angle grinder and a file - not recommended) and have the top of the rod turned down to the correct diameter as well as having it shortened and rethreaded. This mod cost me $60 for a complete pair of front struts, the rest was done at work.

Sounds like a bit of work for me but definately worth doing... I'll put it on my "To do" list

Yea I'm waiting for a reply on the auction asking how much he wants for the wheels, in the meantime I'll check the Haynes manual for the offset.
