Well my headlights are screwed for sum reason! parking lights are sweet, full beam is sweet, but normal ones arent working.

my right hand one has been going on and off for a while and then it started to stay off so today i took the lights off sumhow, rounded screws and rusted things breaking all around me. anyway i see 3 wires going into the main bulb, 2 yellows and a brown, and then 2 smaller wires going into the parking light bulb a red/black and a brown. i can get the parking light to go by turning the lights on a touching the brown wire onto the bulb part and it goes, but i cant get the headlight to go. full beam is sweet i just put the bulb into the 3 wire terminal thing and it goes. at a guess maybe the bulb isnt earthed properly when the headlights are on? if anyone could help that would be great. i have square headlights if that makes any difference, as opposed to round ones. oh and just to add a bit, when i really really REALLY rev'd my engine hard in 3rd my headlight that kept goin off would sumtimes come back on.

Sounds like its the bulbs, they could be the kind with two filaments. If the dip light filament is broken the other filament (full beam) will still work.

If the lights come on sometimes then its just a faulty earth or live connection somewhere. Also could just be the bulb thats popped on the drive light of the dual filament as mentioned?

One question though, if you buy new headlights then it wont make a difference to the light side of things as the bulbs all pull out. Just replace the bulbs or even the bulb housings and keep you own lights as they are. If your cables and connections are goosed then most old style bulb holders will fit with a bit of work, I know mini ones do for example.??

they could be sealed beam though - hence the requirement for replacement.

I've now got about 5 square lights to suit the mk2 - all the replaceable halogen type. I can have a dig through my pile and see if there any any good ones if anyone wants them?

I never had any intentions to replace my lights, just thought it would have been a faulty earth.

I never thought about sealed units being fitted to an Escort, good point. Having never owned a square lamped Mk2 I was just guessing that they would be the same as the round ones??

You can fit any bulbs you like mate. I have some of blue ones some place? I actually have the BMW style "angle eyes" lights fitted to my Mk2. They are the type that have the side lights as a ring/circle around teh outside of lights, they look very different!
