trunk-rattlin
well folks, when the 1300 motor is warm and is running sweet whenever i go 2 turn it off it tries to stop but keeps on tickin. It struggles to fire for about 5-6 seconds after the key is in the off position. whats up with that and how i get it fixed?? i turned idle down from 1000 to about 750 btw. still happens next problem when ever the motors warm, while your sriving it there is a clicking noise like a creak in the dash but tonight after 30min country drive , i popped the hood and could see little 'bolts of lightning' between the ignt. lead and the carb manifold thingy. this wasnt constant and made clicking noises.... anyone? Jerm
check your timing . i think its called running on when you engine tries to continue running after you turn it off.... i'm not completely sure how it works but it is something to do with your plugs being hot and stuff... someone else will know its a common prob..... and about the arcing check your leads but be careful you don't want it arcing near the carb it could catch on fire ... and that would be bad... i'm sure someone else knows more about this than me.... jinx
With the leads it's not uncommon for them to deteriorate enough to "leak". I imagine they don't look so hot to start with so a new set will have that problem solved. Every one of those sparks you can see is one less getting to the cylinder... I think running on (also called dieseling) is normally a timing issue. Get the manual out and reset everything to the correct settings. A good time to have a damned good look at the condition of your cap, rotor and points... Once you've replaced the leads and redone the timing/dwell it should be much nicer! GNR
CHOKE- On my crappy 82 civic, when its warm and i turn it off, with a bit of choke, it does excatly what your car does. So im guessing its that...or sumthing to do with the carbs the clicking noise, is prob from the spark thing u saw....but, if u have a timing problem, it could be from that, let me explain, you timing is prob set to early, so as the piston is going up, the spark fires. so the spark is fireing to early, apparently your ment to be able to hear a tin tin sound, or click click sound, normally u notice it, like in 4th gear or sumthing, and u boot it, ( this is what my mate told me about , when we set the timeing on my car)
trunk-rattlin
yeah it sounds exactly like and when u said gnr. kinda like the cd is skipping...... I know sfa about timing so meh, get someone to do it for me. IM only young!! and how much do leads cost
two_days_late
i had the same problem on my esky. theres a little screw on the side of the dizzy, loosen this and turn the cap slightly then tighten it and take the car for a run, see if it still happens, keep turning the cap just slightly and see if it gets better or worse untill its sweet
Jerm
dude .. if your going to set the timing don't do it like that... you need to use a timing light and set it at idle ...... nah about the choke thing... my car does it when i turn the car off with the choke still on ... its normal... but it shouldn't do it all the time when the choke is off... i'm pretty sure your timing will be out by a bit.... trunk-rattlin
im in roto-hole so i will need new leads?
Toucan
I'm also young. I wouldnt bother paying somebody to do it, timing aint that hard aye, but yea if you dont have a timing light it probly would be best to get one. Its a good thing to know how to do and an escort is probably the easiest car in the world to do it on ...Carb tuning... thats when you wanna pay someone to do it for you lol
jinx
so i will need new leads? If they're sparking like you say they are, and you can't attribute it to anything else other than the leads, then yes. You could try a set from another car to test first if you like, but it's probably pointless. They should not arc like you describe if they are in good condition and properly fitted. As far as cost goes, it varies quite a lot. Best you give the rip-off bastards at repco a call for an indication.
trunk-rattlin
if i get the timing re-set and it doesnt 'arc' anymore, can i keep my leads?
Jerm
i spose but its better just to get them... they aren't expensive
Guest escort_boy
go to repco and buy them!!!
Hemi
NO!!!! go to super cheap yea setting your timing is simple man i know next to nothing about cars and ive done both the whole light timing one and the points as well ...simple as ..just my two cents
jinx
if i get the timing re-set and it doesnt 'arc' anymore, can i keep my leads? You have two different faults. Getting the timing sorted will do nothing for the leads - they're shot. Get new ones.
