    PAINT THREAD

Is sanding the right approach for this? The top layer of paint is rubbish, its really crazed and cracked and has poor adhesion (duct tape peels the paint off). Should I carry on sanding like I am, or am I better off chemical stripping it or doing something else?
  2. I had a whole day to spend on the trailer yesterday so had another big crack at it. Soooo much welding... I've got pretty much all the frame welded out now and have made the door for the front. I've heard back from the galvanizers and they reckon they can't do it, so now I'm expecting that I will get it arc sprayed as long as its not going to cost a silly amount. Next up, along with finishing all the doors, I'll get some chipboard packing sheets to lay a mock-floor cos I'm getting sick of tripping over while I'm working on it and then I can start planning and building the fit-out parts. Plans include: Removable/stowable bike wheel chocks Tire/wheel storage A stowable mobile trolley incorporating my tools, spares, fuel and fire extinguisher to make set up at the track easier A work bench Maybe a bed
  3. This is awesome! Lilliput Gazelle is my favourite oldschool caravan. Definitely jealous!
  4. *Happy Dance* It is now totally legal for me to hoon the CRM up and down the road to free up the clutch
  5. Who ever saw a CRM 50 look so big as one that’s parked next to a JR50!?
  6. I got all the fuel hoses sorted out and it still wouldn't run right. So I have stripped the carb down, put it through an ultrasonic cleaner and re-assembled. I got myself all set up ready to start it up, and you know how with kick start bikes you always tend to give it a gentle push through of the kick starter to get a feel for where its at in the cycle? Yeah well I did that, gently stroke of the starter.... ring ting ting ting ting. Not a word of a lie, it started that fucking easy. Tuned up the pilot and now it will sit there and idle and has a nice crisp brap. I've also replaced the front brake pads, and freed up the seized rear brake lever. I just need to get the clutch free'd up now and this bitch is pretty much ready to ride.
  7. Fair enough old boy, will have to catch up with you for a coffee and a yarn another time Moooooving on... HYPE! I got my bike running properly yesterday. Fizz levels are very high!
  8. Entry list seems to be lacking Foamers? @Mop Head @GuyWithAviators @Shakotom ?
  9. I don't know what's wrong with the world that means that bike is still for sale.
  10. Lots of these pictures of similar kits show that part up the other way.
  11. Could that gold part be installed up the other way? So it is on the lower pivot but the rod aligns close to the original location? Or does it then clash with the original pin?
  12. I’ve had to do lots and lots of thinking and careful measuring to make sure this is straight and square, cos my floor is certainly not. It’s been braced and clamped and pulled with tie downs, but it’s pretty much where it’s in its shape now. Very hard to get a decent photo. Most of the posts are in and some of the top frame. Soooo much welding.
  13. This was us with it jacked up on the trailer so we could drain the petrol tank, after tearing off the most ridiculously poorly mounted fuel pump that never pumped fuel.
  14. As an aside, the steering rack in my mums Tickford "factory" RHD mustang was originally designed for a LHD fiesta (from memory).
  15. I'm fairly sure the unintended consequences would be in the bump steer once you add castor. When you swap the uprights from one side to the other and then rotate them backwards to get castor, the steering arm having moved from the front to the back will now be lower relative to the rack than what it used to be.
  16. Next on the list is the front brake pads. i think they’re due…
  17. I’ve still got some carb issues to sort. The hoses are very hard and aren’t sealing so it pisses fuel everywhere and I think it’s sucking air into the oil hose. Last night I thought I’d see how much of the road gear was in the box of bits and assembled the front. I was so stoked it was genuinely all there including most of the original screws. None of the wiring has been cut. The Speedo cable wasn’t lost. It even has the original key that matches for the fuel tank! I fired it up quickly and it all came to life
  18. Got a wee bit more done last night. Tacked the other bars into the front section and welded out the top part. Thought it might be easier before the upper framework goes in. I didn’t want to start fully welding the bottom and bracing until the top is restrained. Also got the rear frame tacked up.
  19. I also rode the silver bullet GT”50” to work today. The vibration issues are much much better with the new tank mount and the engine mounts all up tight
  20. Alrighty. CRM update. Manawatu Hondas finest parts man organised me a bunch of parts from Japan to get the carb back together and reinstate the auto oiler. Choice. I asked around on the bucket bike pages if anyone had a spare choke knob, as these are the same carb as an NSR50, but a 15mm carb is no use to anyone on a race bike, so I knew there would be some hiding in parts bins somewhere. Sure enough I got a whole carb in the mail. Excellent. I rebuilt my carb like a new one but the bike just wouldn’t run for more than a few seconds. Like a float issue. I stripped and compared both carbs and found that the little posts that retain the float pin were chipped, and the float pin was well, floating. Good one pictured. So tonight I tossed the spare carb on with my original jets in it and hey presto, second gentle kick and it’s running! stoked!
  21. Yeah I had thought about making it in sections with a few cold galv painted welds to join. But it was just going to be a massive paint in the ass. I’ll be happy with anything from epoxy painted upwards, have started sending my drawings out this week to see what’s achievable and what it will cost.
  22. I’ll send them my drawings and see what they say
  23. Yeah but this is big in 3 dimensions. I’ve looked, but am yet to find a big enough bath. They all tend to be long, narrow and deep. So a wide flat trailer could be dipped sideways, but not if it’s 2m tall…
  24. Yeah I’m hoping to make some modular bits that “clip in”. I don’t think it will fit into any galvanising bath, so I’m hoping I will be able to get it arc spray galvanised if it isn’t crazy expensive. I’m also looking into industrial epoxy paint coatings. I don’t want to just brush paint it with hammerite like I have for my standard trailer. Because it will be clad in glued ACM I really don’t want to ever need to be doing rust repairs.
