I know you guys are keen on DIY'ing this but since paying someone to acid dip the wheels has been mentioned, I will just say that Elite Wheel Co in chch polished up my work equip 01's to virtually a mirror-finish, and painted the parts that needed painting black for $50 a wheel. Sure the backs of the wheels are still all dull/covered in brake dust and road muck, but there's no way I'd have ever have gotten the viewable side of the wheels that mint just with hand-polishing. If acid dipping costs more than that or roughly the same, then I'd just opt for the polish n' paint option from elite/local wheel shop. The dip would still leave you with dull-looking alloy (albeit nice and clean), right?

    For the price of some twin carbs and a new cam + the extras and the fuckarounds needed to make this work, you could easily get an 18R-G Not all that long ago, I picked up an 18R-GEU off tardme, complete with ECU, loom and a W50 gearbox for $600 - it ended up coming with the donor car too so I got the fuel pump and a few other bits and pieces with it as well. After selling all the bits from the donor car, the engine/ECU/gearbox/etc has cost me about $100. It's just a matter of keeping your eyes out for one.. after I'd bought mine I watched as a "rebuilt" 18R-GEU + ECU went for a mere $200 on a $1 reserve auction. If you are really desperate for a turbocharged R-motor, start with an 18R-GEU, get a turbo manifold made up for it and use a megasquirt/link for engine management. 22R-TE is just a grotty truck motor, a turbocharger does not a performance-engine make

  6. I used a 3A-U Clutch plate and the stock Clutch Cover to put a smallport into my kp. The K50 bellhousing needed a bit of massaging even with the 16v flywheel.
  7. So did this transform your K50 into a 4 speed or were you able to retain 5th? I've heard elsewhere you could rebuild A-series K40/50's with parts from K-series ones, it's nice to have this confirmed I think they built 3A-U Carinas with T50's due to the increased weight of the car, afaik the only difference between them and the 4A-GE T50 is the the clutch fork on the opposite side.... although now that I think about it the input splines might be different?

    it uses some twinbarrel aisin clunker with auto choke, i have a few lying around and also the 18r engine manual if you wanted more info/pics etc.. dont waste your money fucking about with a lumpy cam in a single-cam 18r, just get a DOHC 18r-g - they don't go for all that much and will bolt right in place of the single-cam engine, using the same gearbox and everything
  9. Toying with the idea of rebuilding my 18R-GEU before dropping it into my Mark II.. If I was going to do this I thought that it'd be nice to get ahold of some earlier 18R-G high-compression pistons(9.7) as my -GEU has 8.3's. I'd be using a MS for engine management to handle the change in C/R. Ideally I'd want to get brand-new pistons, but the only aftermarket 18R-G pistons that seem to come up on google are ones that'll take the engine out to 2200cc - I don't want to do this. I've tried Toyota, but they were (predictably) useless, seeing as the engine is getting pretty old now.. Anyone know of somewhere that makes/supplies 18R-G high-comp pistons that are just standard size or maybe +1 or +2 oversize? Cheers, Rob
  10. I also agree with you that this "young vs old" is a repeating pattern in society. All I'm saying is that now we've identified this fact, shouldn't we start looking for solutions to this problem that have the least damaging effect on everyone involved? Targeting cocky young cunts and slapping them with outrageous fines and convictions for basically just being a noisy pest is not exactly going to endear them to society or fill their bellies full of good feelings for "the man". Regardless of how you view the issue, the guys and girls out there driving their cars see it as just a bit of harmless fun with their mates - and if you step back and gain a little perspective on it, isn't that really what it is? Sure some people can't sleep and it's bad for people's business, that really sucks, but in the grand scheme of things there's a hell of a lot bigger problems facing NZ - if only we spent half the time agonising over them as we do some stupid kids with a buzzing car Basically I see no gains to be made by actively criminalising and marginalising young people, no one wins if the next generation is a pack of police-hatin'-dont-give-a-fuk thugs. Kids don't gain a respect of the police when the police come down on them like a ton of bricks for some minor infraction, shit like that just makes people grow up hating the cops, and that's really not good for society. Since we know kids can be headstrong jerks, shouldn't we act like the adults we like to pretend we are and take the higher road.. I'm not saying we shouldn't punish those who step out of line, but we definitely shouldn't start making new laws that turn otherwise law-abiding kids into criminals - just cos they're into cars! I agree, you're never going to attain a state where everybody behaves perfectly ALL the time, if we could there'd be no need for the police, the justice system etc etc etc. Criminality isn't specific to people who drive cars - every subculture has it's troublemakers, but I don't see laws targeting rugby supporters/players, despite all the drunken violence and damage that is caused by them. Christchurch's problem's aren't any better or worse than any other major NZ city, it's just the rich jerks who run the city have decided to use the city's car culture as a scapegoat for society's ills. This new law sucks because it does nothing to prevent actual criminals committing actual crimes, it just creates a NEW class of criminal from young people who are (at the very worst) causing an annoyance.

That may be, but you and I both know these new rules won't get rid of the whole problem It's going to wind up alienating young people, load them up with fines that they cant pay and increase the tension between them and the police. Basically, it's just going to escalate the situation and cause more problems for everyone. I just wish the City would take a more constructive approach to dealing with the issue. Back when I was in primary school, the Panic-du-Jour was Skateboarding. Apparently, back then, skateboarders were antisocial vandals who did graffiti and drugs and were generally not very nice people. The City was all set to ban them from footpaths and parks and basically do all they could to marginalise skaters... But then (for reasons unknown to me) the council started listening to some of the more perceptive councillors and decided to try building a place for skaters to go, rather than blanket-banning them from the city. These days Christchurch has gotta have over 10 different skate parks, and it's been over a decade since I saw any scare-mongering negative press regarding them. Problem (essentially) solved. The solution to the "boyracer problem" will come out of an attitude change, the part that most people are missing is that it's going to require an attitude adjustment ON BOTH SIDES before any progress can be made.

You obviously haven't been paying attention if you think people complaining about this are the sorts who pull skids and try to drift around subdivisions at night. This is the Government and the City Council turning driving your car and resembling a stereotype into a crime. Like I said, EVERYONE at the select committee was pro noise-limits, but the Politicians and the City Council ignored an idea that might have had a chance of reducing the negative impact on the community; instead opting for a shitty, un-enforcable law that wastes valuable police time. You ever wonder why the cops don't give a shit when your car gets flogged/broken into? It's cos they're too busy policing shitty populist laws like this one. You're an idiot if you think this is a good idea, or that it will make any difference to the retards who rock fartcans at 3am. Everytime some shit-ass politician needs a ratings boost, they bust out the tired old boyracer war drum and pass some more laws that reduce the rights of legitimate motorists. I for one am fucking sick of my hobby being used by self-absorbed politician cunts to prop up their fucking egos and support bases.

Callum: Good on you for making a submission, but having been party to earlier attempts to stop this stupid, ineffective law I'm going to recommend that you don't hold your breath Runamuck: It's not just the Aves... all in all I believe there are about 60 roads in Christchurch that will be affected, including all 2-lane roads and the route out to Sumner. Mk2escort: Cruising has been defined as "repeatedly driving over the same stetch of road in a manner likely to draw attention to your vehicle or it's engine". As I understand, "repeatedly" means "more than once", but wtf does the rest of it mean? Sounds ripe for selective enforcement.. Can you imagine trying to argue in court that your car wasn't "drawing attention" when there's a carload of cops who say that it was? Bob "Cunt" Parker was talking about getting automatic numberplate recognition on the traffic cams to police this new bylaw.. So pretty soon the movements of the entire city will be monitored, logged and analysed for potential boyracer activities... Police state anyone? I attended the select committee that was held to let people have their say on the Bill that made it possible for the City Council to pass this bylaw... It was plainly obvious the politicians had already made their decision, and no amount of reasoning or level-headed arguments were going to get them to change their minds. At the select committee, EVERY submitter, both for and against the Bill, agreed that the biggest problem was noise, there was not a single person who wasn't in-favour of more restrictive exhaust noise requirements. The idea being if the noise is reduced, then the harm to the motelier's business/regular people's sleep is reduced. Despite this, the select committee didn't even recommend noise limits be looked at, they just went right ahead with the same broken, misguided ideas that they had BEFORE they "asked" the community for input. I drove through town during the last 4's and Rotors weekend and was honestly surprised at how quiet the cars were.. Considering it has to be the biggest night of the year for cars driving around the city. I recently spent a week up in Auckland - the noise from the cars on the roads up there is far, far worse than anything in Christchurch. But I guess in a city that has at least 1 armed robbery per day, some dick with a farty car isn't really a top priority. The Christchurch "boyracer problem" isn't about loud exhausts or dangerous driving - It's all about the city's image and the Fendalton/Merivale crowd's distaste for a hobby they consider to be crude and working class. These pricks won't be happy until no one can have any fun in a car and that's why instead of getting laws/initiatives that will try and curtail the actions of the badly-behaved, law-breaking minority, we get laws that punish everyone - regardless of whether they are breaking the law or not.
  17. Last cruise I attended in Christchurch, I estimate close to 1/2 the cars had "problems" that would have caused them to receive tickets/be ordered off the road. Nothing I would consider serious, but if you were going to be picky... (and cops are renowned for being picky). I'd like to take this moment to point out that (based on power figures sourced from the net) the conversion from a 2k to 4k is over the 20% increase in power that is allowed by the lvvta, and should technically be certified. Don't worry, my 100% legal car and I won't be attending out of principle.

I don't make trouble, and my cars are legit because I do things the right way - partly because I don't want trouble from the authorities, but MOSTLY because I don't want to be driving an unsafe, poorly put together vehicle. I just see very little reason to report my whereabouts to the Police when there is no legal requirement to do so and I am abiding 100% within the law. Frankly it's none of their business. Playing by the rules is great - means less hassles and more fun - but the rules do not require this sort of event to be okayed by the Police. You guys better hope that theres no officers that are a bit short on their ticket quota that day..
  19. For the cruising law to be applied by the Police, the local governing body (in this case the Christchurch City Council) has to designate the streets in which cruising is banned. The City Council has not yet done so (as far as I know), and even if they had I would be very surprised if any roads aside from the Four Avenues were included. "Cruising" is also defined as repetitive driving (this is more than TWICE according to National MP Nicky Wagner) on the same stretch of road, therefore the cruising law does not apply in this case. Not to mention that the new cruising law is a totally unworkable piece of junk-legislation. I would think that any real car enthusiasts would be resisting this ridiculous intrusion into their private hobbies - NO ONE should be required to notify the police of their activities, unless ordered to do so by the Court. Instead of rolling over and accepting this infringement on our human rights, people should be standing up to these bully lawmakers who leverage the hysteria surrounding the boyracer-stereotype for their own political aims. We should be refusing to abide by their pedantic and unreasonable laws (which incidentally do nothing to control the real trouble-makers). Personally I think it sucks that simsey took it upon himself to notify the police about this event without even asking for anyone else's input, to be honest I think its actually quite rude. Lets hope it has earned him his junior detective badge, eh? Imagine if someone turned up to your house for a party and informed you that they had just got off the phone to noise control/the Police and let them know there was a party happening at your address, would you say "gee thanks bro" and welcome them inside? I don't think so... Anyway, to wind it up: No one has a responsibility to notify the Police of any car cruises. The law requires you organise the cruise with the local governing body, and this is ONLY if the cruise is occurring on streets that have been designated "no cruise zones". Disclaimer: My cars are legal and I make the effort to drive within the road rules (as much as anyone on here anyway).

    what about using one of these to press/push the spindle out? should be able to use it in-situ.. known as a bearing/brake drum puller iirc. as other have already said, heating shit up can help free things - but it might pay to be cautious. blasting your steering/suspension components with heaps and heaps of heat could potentially warp/weaken them.

  23. yeah you need to get them done by someone's who's certified. for example: pete's customs in chch told me they weren't certified to do it, but they gave me the name of another outfit in town who can (royce clive). if its done by a pro the lvvta don't complain
