Another possibility is blocked jets... my carb used to always be getting clogged with shit from the tank/old fuel filter, used to make my car run like shit. Might need a blow out with some compressed air/carby cleaner, at least its something cheap to try... Bigger problem could be carbon build up on the pistons/valvves/head... creates hot spots which ignite fuel early/late causing run on etc...
