Popular Post 64valiant
Well we made it to beach hop over the weekend. Started with a trip to tauranga to drop off my 1600 which I sold on Thursday at 930pm..... That's what it's going into. We continued on to whangamata. Made it there at 130am in the end. Fell into bed and was up the next day 1st thing to try get this vw running and make sure we didn't have any issues..... well turned out the radiator was just pressuring and spitting fluid everywhere from word go. So an air lock???? Bled the system a couple of times. Nope still and air lock. At this stage Sean (@oftensideways) was over giving me a hand and we decided we needed to put a bleed nipple in the top housing on the engine. Of we went to see gadget from import x. R100 off old school. We used a drill and Tap from him and got a bolt. Which was handy. Turned out I think the engine had no water in it at all. About 4 letters of water later it was fill to the brim and I was brapping around the block no problems at all. Continued to then finish off my upholstery Yay time to drink. Saturday rolled around and I was up at 8am driving the car threw town to get to the car park. Giving it a good strop and letting the thing Rev it's guts. This was fun. No loud v8s around me. Got into the line quite early which was good. Brent at doozi made me a sign board which I put info on and some photos of how the build went. I had a mate A Aron and his wife come for a ride threw the main parade. Was so cool driving it thew. We had heaps of people ducking down to see threw the front window as I drove passed them. I also packed 2 Bags of ice right next to the radiator trying to prevent it over heating. Did a bloody great job that. Just as we got to our park the over flow just started to spit out. From there I set up camp till about 6. I had a consistent flow of people looking at it and talking to me about it It had a heaps of attention which was cool. Best beach hop so far. All in all it was so good. Also here is a top tip to cover your trumpets if it starts to rain like it did on Saturday while I was by the car. Another shot of it for why not Mate Chris runs the security over there and diverted me to let my car call down but doing that I Gave it a foot full and he really liked the sound, and here he is putting a cone up his bum to impersonate me apparently.

64valiant
So I thought since I have a car show this weekend coming and chrome the weekend after I better pull the car apart and fix the main things that need to be done. 1st things 1st cut the spare wheel well out. I did plan on building a thing like this to stop hot air travling into the cabin. But my radiator is a tad tall so will just make a devider against the bonnet and use a door seal to keep the heat out. Hopefully with the amount I cut out should allow air flow to max. Also gotta chuck safety belts in it. Slot my rear arms so don't have heaps of toe in. Also notch them so I don't smash the spring plates all the time. Few other things. Brought a fuel pressure reg but don't have a drill at home to screw it on. Should help out with over fueling the bitch.
Popular Post 64valiant
Kegan came over last Friday night and we got busy. He put a new brake master cylinder in. Bled the brakes up and we have great stopping power now. We also chucked the bonnet latch on chucked the bonnet on. Works out and clips on and off super easy. I need to tighten a few more bolts that I kinda just put in for the car shows. And put the engine lid on also. Really thought this was going to help with stopping the crap getting into the engine bay. Turns out nah. Shit still gets in there from underneath. Engine bay was a shambles when I got to the car show on Saturday. Travelling engine forward in the rain sucks. Also asked a few people if they had made engine lid removal things and a mate came back with this set up. Shit it's great. Works great to keep the water out say at a car show and saves me having to cover up the trumpets every time I think it's going to rain. Although I gave up and just put my water bottle covers on them. Just a tad easier. Day went well. Went to load it on the trailer and everyone lost there shit. People came from all over and phones where everywhere. As I loaded it into the trailer the hand brake button popped out and fucken was a cunt to get sorted while half loaded trailer..... Then I managed to do it at home twice unloading the trailer and then fouled the plugs gave up and then the cable for the Accelerator broke. God dam it. So a few more things to do on it again. Might take it to caffeine and classics this weekend so got a bunch of crap to get done this week make it work again and it's already up on axle stands. Haha.
Popular Post 64valiant
Found the reason why my Accelerator cable stopped working. It probably got something to do with the sparkie wiring block that's holding it together....... Hold up. Closer inspection says it wasn't my kiwi ingenuity collapsing. Turns out split pin up the front of the car gave up and decided to run away. Chur. vw 0 Greg 1
64valiant
Been slowly working on this thing getting it ready for chrome. It was a cunt to drive when I did drive it. I figured it was hitting spring plates from when I kinda slapped it together. So I notched them. What a prick. 58 floor pan has different plates from 60s pans. So I couldn't even take them off and cut them and make them look nice. So I done them on. I don't recommend this. I got all safety and put a guard on my grinder for the 1st time ever and the thing spat a fucken dummy and decided it didn't want to cut steel ended up cutting its own cord and almost me. So got my other grinder and didn't put a guard on that to continue cutting it. No problems. While I had it apart I elongated the rear holes to help with the huge toe in these things have when you lower them. Done this on my other bug. Took about 4mm off them maybe 5mm but makes a huge difference. I think the hole spring bottoming out was kinda a good thing cause when I took it off its jacks I instantly thought shit. I think that's a lot lower than before hand...... Went to roll in backwards... Yeah she's lower than before. A nice big scratch in the concrete garage floor from the flexi..... Great. She is a lot lower than before. Well about 20mm lower but enough to burn exhaust marks in grass now. Thank God I've got the air shocks in it, to assist with some height movement.
64valiant
Made it to chrome yesterday and went for a hoon. The is me heading up the hill at Hampton downs in 2nd changing into 3rd. Car is still running like a bag of balls and really needs a good tune. Need to buy new water pump, thermostat, think I'm going to rear mount the fan so it pulls instead of pushing and think I will be making a few trips to @Rhyscar place to get alloy bent up to make a better radiator induction and the same with a pile cooler will find one and direct the the air into that. Cheers to @flyingbrick for the video and the help yesterday. On other news I only got 3 laps in as 1st lap time out I didn't trust it fully and fuck everyone else was going fast. 2nd time out I had a bit more fun but I could smell it getting hot. Pulled in water exciting my radiator at a high volume. Tis great though.
Popular Post 64valiant
Got a few things sorted for this. Been wanting to do this for a while. Radiator set up looks like this. The hot air just goes straight into the cabin. Got some cardboard out to do some cad. I got some 2mm alloy off @Rhyscar and cut these up and went to ttt automotive and use his bender to use put some shapes in it. I also used @Archetypes trailer to bend it into shape. And finalise the curvs. And I went and spent a bunch of money. Brought a genuine weber brand new.

Popular Post 64valiant
So we made it to beach hop earlier this year but I hadn't run it with anything so didn't drive it anywhere at beach hop and I hadn't started it in ages so didn't want to end up kinda rushing it and breaking more stuff so pushed it into the car park and made it look good at beach hop. We had people come try push it out of its car park on the main street while we weren't there cause it wasn't ment to be there was ment to be in the cruise and then park it there. They come back with a bunch of other people to try lift it away..... Like fuck that was happening. Told them I kinda had every right to be there as I wasn't going to be pushing it down the main street had paid for my place to be in the cruise and that I had put all my effort to get it going and had my sticker and pass. They said they would let it slide this time. Day went on and we ended up having a good time. Had the little kombi parked next to it as well. Anyway got it back and we had vw nats like a week later and I thought I'd try start it now I had a bit more time to fix it if it didnt go well.... Well it was 2am of the show and I was in the shop swapping out one starter motor for another starter motor cause one decided to stop. And the one I swaped it with didn't want to go either. Had another good time and caught up with a bunch of mates. It kinda sat dormant till now and my employee was giving me stick and I thought I'd do some work on it. Got a new starter motor and went to install it and ended up doing this. Starter more had screwed the part it went into and elongated the hole. So we drilled it out to a bigger diameter and made a bush for it. All in and now I have to carefully take the extra material off so the engine/adapter plate will slide into place now that the bush sticks out. Have a mate in Auckland with a cnc and a few other tools, actually he's on here as well. Going to take my adapter plate and fly wheel upto him to get him to draw them up and make some files so when his cnc is running better and he's got some practice I'll get him to make a couple of them to sell. As for that I think I'll also redo the exhaust to look a bit more stock and a few other things a bit better. Dont know when the last time I heard this thing brap. 10

64valiant
i spent a bunch of time last night searching around and around for my bloody starter motor. found it under something under something else........ done alterations around the shop and cleaned up left right and center so as per norm my parts just get put where ever they go. had to file the bush a little bit as it seemed tight but hopefully slap it back together and make it one today as i have all the correct bolts and everything else now

Popular Post 64valiant
Fuck yeah. came back for lunch today and put my accelerator cable on and found the nuts for the exhaust so put that on. Then filled it full of water and chucked some new plugs in it. so happy to have it brapping again. need to sort a water temp sender and a reader as my one is reading the block temp and not the engine. and will again re do the radiator a bit better and get it tuned.
Popular Post 64valiant
ahhh so reunion is just around the corner so i thought id better do something with my car. - Oil cooler - Fix front seal - Get new water pump housing - New water pump outlet - Cut front of beetle up more - Nut and bolt check - Polish and clean - Finish Upholstery off - Put door handles and window winders on (not just hot glue ya egg) - Make passengers door open easy - Make radiator better - Buy gas - Do some braps so went to do the front seal. yeah that will be easy right. went and visited pat and gav at hpr and came home with this lot so removed the seal and rang a guy to ask about timing and what not as i had the front pulley off and well yea im able to put it on at all sorts of angles and he said what ever you do dont do anything i will be in the afternoon. turns out when you take the pulley off the chances of the bearings dropping are high unless you have your foot on the clutch. well yeah we didnt do that off with the front housing oh hello bearing i see you have dropped off. there is ment to be another little thrust tube in there but had removed it already at this point. it was at this stage i had to shoot to the drs and my worker and old mate matt worked on the beetle and i came back to this all back together and matt has timed it up as well. we put a helicoil in the far end of the water pump as well for alternator to bolt to. this is where my last water pump housing was cracked and was leaking. also painted them to look all nice and match the engine. now im on the hunt for a polishing bit for my drill so i don't have to hand polish everything since it hasn't been done for two years since the beetle got built. note you can see where i did polish and where i haven't polished. hopefully hear from Tim at old TTT engineering saying that he has welded up my pipe and i can come get it so i can start this thing up this weekend.
