Popular Post johnnyfive
I don't think I've ever made threads for any of my current bikes. I don't do anything particularly interesting with them from a project perspective. Just attempt to maintain and improve where I can. This will mostly be pics. XR650R, have had for about 5yrs, probably only ridden actively for a year or two total of that time. Goes (IMO) hard. Probably too hard for me. Previous owner reckons it had been taken out to 680cc. It has a aftermarket CDI, noisey boi exhaust, and would probably benefit from a carb. Took it to the drags a couple times, 12.7s quarter was the best I managed. Gets pretty lively on gravel. Rode it around and have slowly attempted to sort out its issues, few more yet. Have safari tank and big stator, an the right set of wheels sitting there for it. One day. When I got it. 11536025_10155674571955099_4189236658958656570_n by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20151219_091851 by John Bell, on Flickr 15325216_454106908046730_4447607667093221977_o by John Bell, on Flickr 23333047081_0e0871bc32_z by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20160306_104356 by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20160306_113924 by John Bell, on Flickr Made a spacer IMG_20180726_163359_HHT by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20180726_170446_HHT by John Bell, on Flickr Bought some black bits IMG_20181028_180740 by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20190525_123410 by John Bell, on Flickr 48240827_948318268625589_5533612005623070720_o by John Bell, on Flickr 47573781_948318068625609_5746037085173710848_o by John Bell, on Flickr
Popular Post johnnyfive
Picked up a 'modern' CT110 a little while after that, then another. Both ex-DX-mail. Fitted LED lights, stereo, and cruised around the farm/east cape. Currently daily-ing one for dairy farm duties. Popular Post johnnyfive
Found these two mid 90's XR200 in a shed from my teenage years, sold them, because even Honda can't make a bike that will stand up to teenager on a dairy farm. IMG_20180624_125712 by John Bell, on Flickr That led to me eventually buying a mid ninties XR250R. Which is everything the 200 is not. Double discs, actual power, better suspension. This one is a little bit beat up, but mostly intact, and has done fairly low KM. Currently attempting to get it a bit nicer and possibly go through the registration process. Popular Post johnnyfive
Those with a keen eye may have noticed the CRM50 in the last photos, that I obtained a few months later. It was also quite rough. I've spent a little time sorting bodges and attempting to return things closer to original where possible. Very pleased with the 50. You'll notice tiny rear tyre. Popular Post johnnyfive
Also picked up a childens CRF50 earlier in the year, because fuck it, why not. Bought a big pile of Aliexpress parts then got distracted by, 1988 XL185S. Amusingly similar to the XR200 of my youth. Probably could be considered 'shed-find' condition. WOF expired 1998. Rego on hold. Looks better in photos but might be one of the nicer things I own. Carb seized, I might have been too mongrel un-seizing it, so it has a china carb now. Had the rear shocks tickled up/regassed. Bought a new front guard to replaced the crazed/brittle one. Might try for a WOF next week on the 32 year old, original tyres. Its a bit scabby from sitting in a damp environment, but I'm happy. Popular Post johnnyfive
185 also came with original registration and story which I enjoyed. The mans work told him not to drive the work vehicle home at night, so he bought a bike, shortly thereafter they told him there wasn't enough room at the depot to park all the work vehicles, and that he needed to drive it home at night. Looks like he bought bike in '97, and WOF expired in '98. Sounds like he'd used it here and there to ride around the yard and up and down the driveway, but pretty much sat in the shed since. Popular Post johnnyfive
It is a bit of a hoot. I thought I'd gotten over my lust for getting another something like my old street legal RMX250 again. But have been looking at CRM250 again lately. Piiine. I'm a cheap cunt though. Took the 185 and achieved its first WOF in 22 years today. Straight through M8! Its so quiet you can really take in the serenity, and not upset the livestock. Although I did get a very non-committed fist shake from a broken man in a people mover, when I left the road at 50clicks and quietly, purred across some grass siding. I think he was torn between old man angst and confusion, at the mediocrity of my transgression. johnnyfive
Oh, hey, 1 year. Have not been up to much, though have done a minor amount to the 250. Tyres and wheel bearings, front forks freshened up, front and rear pads, clutch plates and cable, speedo drive replaced, chain and sprockets, replace damaged original headlight with pretty convincing UFO copy, Brazilian seat cover (which kass kindly fitted) and tank cover (to hide the yellowing tank) and fender tool bag, set of white bar guards, aliexpress big footpegs. IMG_20210306_183151 by John Bell, on Flickr IMG_20210306_183217 by John Bell, on Flickr Things I'd like to do still, purple sticker for above headlight and sidepanels, possibly pull swingarm and rear shock and look at doing bearings. Still trying to figure out if getting it registered is viable, as I understand, due to the new ABS rules, and this being a '1st time' registration it won't be possible after a certain point later in the year (or possibly already isn't). Oh I picked up an XR100 recently also, its a bit of a sack of shit, so will start collecting parts.
johnnyfive
Oh this was one of the clutch plates, somehow. They were all well outside the minimum thickness but were coated in a black layer and glazed to shit, so I think its been hot, and badly serviced. Seems healthy enough though. Neat bike, I may have some relevant info as I'm currently trying to do the same. Was it sold new in NZ or imported? Also From 1 November 2021 All current model new motorcycles and imported used motorcycles over 125cc must have ABS. All current model new motorcycles and imported used motorcycles up to and including 125cc must have ABS or CBS.
johnnyfive
As far as I can tell it was an NZ new bike that had all the hardware for road use but was never registered at new.
kicker
Have you run the vin/chassis number through Landata? Give VTNZ, Vinz or anyone you know with access, might be something there already. If not you'll probably need to use the Alternative Documents form (ca03) regardless of it's origin, this form is for when you are missing documentation. If it was sold new here and you hopefully can get a letter from BlueWing confirming this and that it is a street legal model then you'll be away laughing but minus $184. Mine was an import and not sold here so I needed an exemption from having the export certificate and to show proof it was a street legal model. johnnyfive
Yeah vin number isn't in the system, blue wing were a little ambiguous with what they were willing to say. Might still be sufficient but need to hurry up and actually try it sometime. "Blue Wing Honda have imported and distributed new motorcycles into New Zealand since 1973. We cannot confirm that your 1995 XR250RS with the VIN Number JH2ME0697SM000024 was imported by Blue Wing Honda. This VIN number does fit within the VIN range (JH2ME069*SM000001~) imported by Blue Wing Honda. We can confirm at the time of new sale this motorcycle would have met all of the required regulations in order to be able to be registered for on road use, therefore should be able to be re-registered at this time. An inspection of the motorcycle may be required to confirm the vehicle is in near original condition."
kicker
That looks pretty good tbh, seems to say they don't have record of selling that particular bike but it's within the bunch they imported which is very good. There's a few other bits and pieces required like declaration of ownership and another declaration involving it's condition (both stamped by a JP), a confirmation of chassis and engine numbers (done by a compliance person at vtnz/vinz) and then any other crap you can provide, the more the better (this was advice from the nzta team themselves), like the sales ad, emails or text convos with the seller, picures of the bike, any documentation you got with etc. It's a bit of faff but seems like it should go through easy. Only thing I'm not sure of but will find out soon I guess, is that once you have approval to register it it might need a Pre Delivery Inspection before Vtnz/vinz will proceed, sounds like its basically a check dealerships do on new vehicles but can be done on used ones, it's just not common but have read of people achieving this.

johnnyfive
So bought a very rough CRF50 near the start of 2020. As is tradition, threw a bunch of AliExpress parts at it, and badly painted rusty bits. It probably wasn't safe sitting around here as I was riding it round the lawn at every opportunity. Have lent it to my nephews until my boy is big enough or they get sick of it. Popular Post johnnyfive
The blue fork boots on the 185 had disintegrated after being ridden for the first time in 20 odd years. IMG_20210426_140223_1 by John Bell, on Flickr AliExpress to the rescue, they're not quite long enough but will do for now. IMG_20210501_131214 by John Bell, on Flickr Annoyingly the rear shocks that I had rebuilt at somewhat of an expense don't seem to dampen very well again, no oil lost so I'm guessing the gas has left. Might have to look to AliExpress for this also. Would like to keep the blue springs though. Have only travelled about 400km on this since reviving it. The jetting on china carb is still a bit off, so will have to experiment sometime. Is nice enough to ride around on though, not fast by any means but would probably tour around at ~80km/h quite happily, will do 100km/h but tach is at 9k by then. Found a gate open close to home and drove up a hill.
