Kimjon's drift trike No11 for me!

The other drift trikes were gifts for old friends I grew up with as a kid. However this one's for me.

I'm in no hurry to finish it...but thought I'd start and as parts become available  (free or cheap) I'll put it together. So far this is what I've done:

Free drift trike and a $50 axle from a mini quad. Seat off a uni-tech project someone didn't get finished and their mum sold it to me on trademe for $20... all I wanted was the seat, the rest went to a local guy who makes bikes and gokarts with school kids after school to teach them life skills.

Manifold taking shape.

Aim is to mount this mikuni (copy) VM26 carburetor to a Honda 6.5hp motor. The motor was given to me by a mate for free. It sat for too long with gas in the carburetor and varnished up. I ordered a new carburetor...but then thought...hmmm???? I have a VM26 sitting here doing nothing, so why not try it out?

Manifold all done.

Oooooohhhh yeaaaahhhh!!!! Just like a brought one! Should be a nice improvement over stock carb.

The motors intake port is D shaped. And the manifold is round...my OCD just can't live with that, just knowing it's wrong would keep me up at nights.

So time for the quick steel. It's basically JB weld, but supposed to be more fuel resistant? Anyway, it makes for shaping a smooth transition to the port easy.

I've got to leave it for an hour or two before I can dremel it into shape. Then we'll see if this was a good idea or not?

Bit more done this morning.

Wheels are just sitting there for inspiration. I need to lathe down the hubs and change to a bolt on style rim. But it's falling into shape.

I'm waiting on an ebay clutch and little bits and bobs to complete. Buying from ebay works out about 70% cheaper. So mandatory 6 weeks waiting time...then should be all set to go.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Went into the shed to make a rectifier mount for a harley...didn't have any steel on hand the right size...so ended up doing this instead:

3661.thumb.jpeg.de9c0478cd2c7f87cf3949090d275643.jpeg

3662.thumb.jpeg.66daf525639c8d11c825b030a9e0183f.jpeg

Then worked on mounting disc brakes to it:

3666.jpeg.9457b313e6d3d75ecf1d5eaed6e34d3c.jpeg

I then mounted the motor and stitch welded everything together. And that's about all I could get done in this heat...time to try relax, though for an active relaxer that's easier said than done.

A few loose ends done this morning. Seat was just sitting there until now...

3821.thumb.jpeg.c36a6c413409f572bd610d0be780d87b.jpeg

I welded a nut to the rear of the frame and added a short cross brace to the front of the seat. M10 bolts will hold it all in place.

The all important number plate bracket is done, and a wheelie bar. Yes I added a fucking wheelie bar as this thing should pull wheelies all day long if you feed it the gas.

Trikes all assembled now. Here's the finished chain tensioner.

Chains coming off is the main issue we've had with these things. It's mostly due to the really shit Chinese chain I brought. Getting quality chain in #35 pitch isn't easy to find...so kinda stuck with the Chinese shit that probably has a 7 year old making it on ex soviet machines from WW2 and a 4 year old doing the QC before it heads out the door.

Anyways...hopefully this is a work around that enables it to function.

90% done now. Just need fuel tank, wire up kill switch and buy some sleeves for the rear tyres. Oh and turn front tyre around as I've got it facing backwards and my OCD is nagging me to fix it.

I did some crude panel beatin on the seat to flair out a lip. Way better!

Here's some cool little touches:

And the nearly finished product:

Yes I did repaint all the orange bits to red. That too was fucking with my OCD...fixed now:)

It's alive!!!!! Maweahaha.....it's alive!!!!!

"Goes hard for what it is bro!"

And a cheeky test ride with no sleeves. The tyres grip so hard it can't be steered like this without the sleeves on. But it's fast and has some real potential.

Cheers mate.

I mostly buy my rims from pics karts in te puke. Normally for around $60-80 a set.

110c.c. axles are on ebay for about $60-80, plus about $40 postage. The price fluctuates a bit...but normally in that ball park. It's on the Australian ebay...but one account works on all the ebays regardless of country. Ideally I buy it second hand of trademe for next to nothing...I've brought mini quads for $1 some days...Or no more than $50 for a roller with no motor.
