Testament
but you would need two if you were going to run e85, so Id consider the walbro 400LPH single pump in that case
robevo
Hi guys I went through all this not so long ago.. I ended up going with a carter Lift pump, Bosch 044 and a surge tank. ( I would post pics, but im just to numpty to get it right - happy to email someone with more knowledge) It works fantatstic, & will handle pretty much any mods I throw at the engine in the future (CA18DET) Did make a noticeable difference, with fuel surge for hill starts etc, and hard cornering. Downsides, both pumps are noisy as.. But lets face it and escort with no carpets etc aint quiet haha... We did some work with another car (VR4) and put the 044 inside the surge tank, and that worked very well, and was a lot quieter, and the advance of less AN fittings to save some cash As for the return, I ran it back to the surge tank, with a return line back to the main tank. My thinking was that if you run the return to the main tank, then the lift pump has to out flow the EFI pump. Even after long running, have not noticed and major increase in the temp of the surge tank etc. Just my 2c worth haha Cheer ROB
Rookie
If you are going to use more than 250L/hr then I'll let you not use a china 044, otherwise it is the thinking mans fuel pump.
Testament
that said I've got a setup sitting in the shed for the 131 like that, carter lift pump and a surge tank with the 044 welded INSIDE the tank so less fuel fittings necessary or something
Rookie
This is the Rookie Dave approved method for EFI fuel setups on carby cars being converted to EFI which are staying NA
Testament
if its boosted you really have to run the lines so the reg is by the motor for the vacuum/pressure signal as running a long pressure signal line would be garbo unfotunately
Rookie
Absolutely, hence why it says that for cars that are staying NA.
mjrstar
pretty sure it would be just fine cool, What happens if its not 'just fine' will it be expensive to fix ?
Testament
Same thing if you have any other fuel system issue really. Fit fuel pressure sensor to the rail and set the ecu to cut spark on low of fuel pressure. I know what you are saying and you can say that about every part and gold plate and you can still Chernobyl the thing. Its risk vs return. I'm not saying there isnt a risk but I am saying not as big a risk as is made out. Inspect the thing, test it before use in anger and for alot of applications they are just fine. Heck those barra motors are cheap as chips anyway!
Testament
basically yes genuine is better, but also costs 5x the price chinese shit is shit but its not all shit all the time, make up your own mind based on your own situation, resources and capabilities as to what is an option that you can live with.
J-W-G
Hmm im interested as to how youd mount the fuel pump in the surge tank?
mjrstar
You can get a walbro gss341 or 342 for less than $170nzd delivered to your door. A surge tank with bolt on lid that replicates the in tank pump cradle is a good option to reduce noise. A cut your way in weld your way back out can be done but has its own issues. Two of my mx5 and evo run walbro in tanks, starlet runs runs a walbro external, and my daily has an 044. The external walbro and bosch both make a bit of noise compared to the in tank. Rookie
To put that into perspective, for $170 I got my: fuel pump, regulator, injectors, coils, and TPS. So for someone trying to do something on the cheap you have completely blown the budget. I appreciate that all of you cars have boost, and so you value your piece of mind quite highly but at the same time you have to get out of the mindset that everything from china is junk, because quite frankly it isn't.
