kkatl
hi all. i went for a drive to town today all is well, until the return trip when an obvious knocking noise starts coming from my engine. i have a 1300 mk2 escort crossflow. i was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem, i have a feeling its a big end bearing gone but im not entirely sure if it is because ive never had one fail on me before. the knocking only occurs at around 4-5000rpm and i can do about 70km/h before itl start knocking. but i can do 100km/h take my foot off the accelerator and it wont knock. its only when i gas it. any ideas guys? ESKIN8R
Hi, Sounds to me not to be your engine at all, If you had a big end knock it would be there all the time. You'd hear it badly if you had it and reved the engine it would have a clattering noise, could be something like a driveshaft universal worn casuing the noise? Or other suspension related noise. dave123456789
If you rev it while the car isnt moving does it make that sound? I had a nasty knock once and thought the same thing. Was a wheel bearing.

Sorensin
Do you have a compression tester? I broke a piston once, still ran - had power lose - had knocking noise - pretty sure it always knocked though...
ESKIN8R
Maybe its a broken engine mount? Check those out
sholdowa
Had a knocking at over 50mph once. Turned out to be an elastic band stuck in the tyre...

danger
Get someone to rev it in neutral while you try pinpoint the source of the sound. Try putting a screwdriver or something to your ear and to different parts of the motor kida like a stethoscope. should be able to tell you what piston and give you an idea if its top or bottom end.
