KKtrips
I would build the framing out of MDF like a sub-box then take it to an upholsterer and get them to cover it in the pleather of your choice with stitching and piping appropriately added. Are you still in the UK? I know people in NZ who have the skills but thats no good to you if you are in ol' Blighty...
Guest
Still in blighty unfortunately. K-trips, are you also known as KKK? I think I stumbled accross some pics of my brother helping lift the body onto your t bucket on here. Small world.

KKtrips
LOLOL - indeed - some people were a little sleepy after a few too many "cigarettes" so decided to wake them up with a burnout in my garage.. FUCK ME powdered rubber is time consuming to clean off every surface in the house - twice as long with a decent hangover..

Guest
In order for my brother and his wife to have some sweetness to ride when they arrive from NZ next week, two new bikes have been procured. I picked the first of the two up tonight. It's an oh so sweet 1980?'s Raleigh Transit. One owner, hardly ridden and garaged for 30 years. It's got a 3 speed Sturmey Archer rear hub with a trigger style gear change and a sprung Brooks leather saddle. I took it out for a ride when I got it home and am still grinning. Rides like how I'd imagined in would have right off the shop floor when brand new. I pick the second bike, a Falcon, up on Monday.

Guest
So, we've been doing more nighttime cruising than George Michael in the last week and have sunk a fair bit of real ale. Here is a pic that I took outside the Cutty Sark as our old steed peloton passed through.
Guest
So, I've been doing a bit of work on the tandem to show it some love. Here it is freshly shod on new Michelin World Tour tyres. I'm also now in receipt of 2 new sets of MKS Sylvan Touring Alloy Pedals (rat-trap) pedals that will go on tonight as well as a 1980 NOS Shimano RS rear deraileur which I managed to find from the states as well as some new cross cut brake pads. I've also replaced both the timing and drive chains with new KMC nickel plated items. The timing chain is 1/8" and the drive chain is 3/32" if anyone ever looks at this as a guide to retoring your Pashley Ladyback tandem. ThePog
I have a set of those rat traps on my commuter, pretty happy with them.
Guest
OK, so my dad passed away just before christmas. Not being one for the likes of rememberance tattoos etc, I was trying to think of a way to honour him. So, our last name is Hobbs, he was born in 1947.....then it came to me..... I present to you my latest addition to the stable, a 1947 Hobbs of Barbican. It's a 58cm frame which is good for me at 5' 11". My goal is to wait for original parts to come up for sale and build it to ride the L'Eroica 200+km long route in 2014. http://www.eroica-ci...nglish/home.asp
Guest
The first purchase for the Hobbs arrived today. It's a NOS Chater Lea chain ring. Chater Lea had a reputation for making quality lightweight components for bikes of this era. Love the fact that it's wrapped in oily paper. Just need to find some matching cranks now! Much like finding parts for the Francis Barnett, these parts don't crop up on the internet that often and you have to have conversations with the old geezers that are hoarding this stuff and jump quickly on them when they do come up. I've also purchased a NOS Bayliss Wiley bottom bracket which should be arriving from the states in the coming weeks. It's weird I know but the US seems to be a treasure trove for cheap old NOS British bike parts. You've got to be wondering where all this shiz has been hiding for the last 65 years. I wrote to the veteran cycle club marque specialist who informed me that the Hobbs is a 1947 Clubweight. Oh, and my new cranks for the Pashley trade bike have just shown up today too. I've been having problems with the sealed cottered bottom bracket and the non drive side crank just hitting the chain stay as it's (the bb) not quite long enough. Rather than go for a cups/cones setup and find an axle to suit, I decided to just buy a generic shimano square tapered bottom bracket and some new Sturmey Archer cranks (FCT66 Track/Single Speed). Not really too bothered as this ones not a period restoration more so a 'frankenbike'. I've applied to enter the 2013 Tweed run (weird setup where you have to buy lottery tickets for a chance to win one of 500 places) so I thought I'd better get it in tip top shape. Purchased some chain tugs to help stop the wheel creep which should arrive next week also. I'm feeling motivated with my projects at the moment. Could be something to do with the days getting longer in the run-up to spring. Lets hope my motivation stays!
alfalfa
Good looking cranks! Loving the CL chainring too
Guest
Some new crank action. Didn't realise they'd come without dustcaps
Guest
More parts for the Hobbs arrived today. The majority of these came with 4 speed Sturmey Archer Hubs as I guess derailleur trechnology wasn't that hot in 1947. I wanted the 4 speed FW version (wide ratio). Problem was I couldn't find any outer 4 speed shells in mint condition so Derek Folgate (http://www.oldbiketrader.co.uk/) did have a NOS 40H 1953 3 speed AW shell and the mint lightly used innards of a FW. Put them together and you have a 4 speed hub in a 3 speed shell. Proper English made Sturmey Archer stuff (none of this inferior Sun Race stuff). If I could get mine looking anything like this, I'd be a happy man. Edited February 28, 2013 by Guest
alfalfa
Whaka yeah! The innards of sturmeys are amazing in exploded view like that
Guest
NOS Bayliss Wiley bottom bracket turned up today.I had a bit of a problem with getting this shipped to the UK. The US e-Bay seller would only ship to the US and wouldn't even accept messages from non US e-Bay users.I set myself up an account with http://www.shipito.com/. They give you a US address you can use for $8.50USD and then onforward for the cost of postage. I entered the US address as an alternative e-Bay address and the seller posted it to therm. Simple and I'd highly reccomend using them.Remaining list to get it anywhere near a complete true to period bike:2 x rims (32 hole front, 40 hole rear - Want some Constrictor rims)Front hub (Want one of the Harden high flange varietyBrakes Bottom Bracket Brake leversSeat post collarSeat postSeat (Want vintage brooks B17 Swallow)Cranks (Chater Lea Fluted)Pedals (Chater Lea or Hobbs of Barbican Lytaloy pedals)ChainHeadset (Possibly Lytaloy)Handlebar stem & handlebars (Ones made by GB)GriptapeCablesToe Clips & Straps (Alfredo Binda)......it's a distressingly long and eye-wateringly expensive list but I have over a year before I need to complete and don't want to do this in half measures.....
