KIRK
that is so cash. How come so many bike parts companies have a four leaf clover as their logo?
Guest
Right, a little more progress. Determined to get this up and running before August summer (?!?) holidays. The 40's/50's Brampton knurled headset that I purchased online arrived today along with some late 40's GB bars (will look nice with a polish). The headset is in a nice used condition and the bearing races are in great condition. Still no sign of the stem but I have faith that it will turnup at some stage.....maybe..... Anyhow, a few questions: 1) The headset takes loose ball bearings and hasn't come with any. What size will I need? 1/8"? 60 should do the job? 2) Anyone care to share their favourite brand of grease for the job (Lithium or something else)? 3) What were people using for bartape in the late 40's? Also, made a start on the Colnago. Purchased and fitted some down tube shifter cable adjusters. Have also ordered a Campag Record headset and dropout adjuster screws. Thanks Pete

If I continue down this slippery slope, I'll be building a jig and building frames like you in no time. Bikes are an obsession.....
Valiant
Haha, you should. Have you had a look here? http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/1940s/1947-1949/1942-malvern-star-5-star-track-bike/ There is all kinds of interesting things there.
KIRK
use goat hide bar tape or something awesome like that haha I use some regular castrol multi purpose grease for headset. It feels nice to ride. is easy to place the balls in, not too slippery. I used lithium grease once in a headset but its too thin. It didn't last very long, it all just leaks out lol. Things wore out quite fast. was pretty much the same spec headset as yours on an old raliegh.
Guest
Some more progress on the Hobbs of Barbican. I have some time off work at the moment. Before dropping the wheels off to be built, I decided to get the Morgan Blue out to give them a quick clean and to get the packing tape residue off where they'd been stuck together. An hour, a fair bit of Morgan Blue and toilet paper later, they'd come up nicely. It's amazing how filthy NOS stuff can get sitting round in a shop/workshop/house sometimes. Purchased some Simichrome off the internet and took to the handlebars. They came up a treat but boy, was other peoples shellac hard to remove! Should of used meths. Got my 6 year old daughter to press the frame races. She does seem genuinely interested. I was missing one of the curved washers for the rear brake and managed to find one off another forum I'm on. I won some GB wingnuts in an auction and they arrived this week. They will come up nice with a polish! Stoked to own a set of these. Pick my wheels up today and am also taking the frame in to get the BB shell refaced as I hadn't noticed, till I tried to fit the cups, that the threads contain a generous helping of paint! Guest
So my Hobbs of Barbican is now finished. Popped in to visit the vague site of where the Hobbs of Barbican shop was at 34 Barbican (bombed during the war) then popped in to see Her Majesty on the way home. Really really pleased with how this has turned out. Rides beautifully for a 65 year old bike and it's pretty quick too!

Going to ride it over 200km in one day from London to Norwich on the 15 December. Should be an experience! Turning my attentions to the Colnago next. That is sexy as hell Cheers man! Guest
So, this happened yesterday. To me, it's the holy grail of gearsets. NOS Osgear Super Champion. Should arrive in the next few days. So stoked to finally own one. It's going on another 1946 Hobbs of Barbican Clubweight that I've purchased.

Guest
Right, just about got all the parts to build up my new 1946 Hobbs of Barbican Clubweight. Meeting men off the internet and collecting rusty shit from their garages since forever. Frame: Fillet brazed 1946 Hobbs of Barbican clubweight: Chater Lea Rat trap pedals: Reynolds Hiduminium seatpost: Lytaloy Brake Levers: NOS Cyclo Block: (22-17-14): URL=http://s926.photobucket.com/user/7VEN_bucket/media/7VEN_bucket070/IMG_9319.jpg.html][/url] Reynolds Spearpoint Stem: Prewar maes type bars: Williams C1200 Cranks: Brooks B32 Narrow Saddle: Some 26 x 1 1/4" Constrictor Conloy Asp rims. The rear came laced to a Gnutti hub and the front laced to a FB (Frateli Brivio) hub. Both small flange with chrome barrels and alloy flanges. The best thing is they're laced up with 15/17 gauge spokes saving me the hassle of having them built up! Bonus! and I can also screw the cyclo block straight on. Also Bluemels Spearpoint extension & Chater Lea BB cups:
Guest
And a few more pics of the Super Champion Osgear setup. Pretty much got everything to get this finally built and if I don't have it, it's on the way! It's amazing. Wonder where it's been sitting for the last 70+ years?!? The tensioning arm: Cable inner or outer. Not sure. Striking fork: Chain guide: 3 speed shifter: Spoke protector:
