kdotlowe
Hi guys, Having a few issues getting the Escort started. Just taken it out of storage where it's been for 3 months. Fresh gas, fully charged battery. First thing I've noticed is that none of my gauges are working, neither is the red 'charging' light - normally this will be on when the ignition is. Lights, indicators and their corresponding instruments are fine. When trying to start the engine, it cranks fine but isn't getting any spark. Each lead wont spark if it's close to the engine block while cranking, neither will the coil to distributor lead (not sure if it's supposed to). Is this a problem with my coil? or is it somewhat related to the above dash problems? Any help would be much appreciated... you guys have never failed me! Thanks
peteretep
have you checked your fuses? and then if one/any of them have blown, maybe check the the main earths I forget exactly what goes to what, but the standard fuse box on an escort combines several items into one fuse so may be the whole answer in 1 fuse
kdotlowe
Earths seem good. Fuses are all intact, mind you half of them are very old. Might change them all out just to rule it out as a cause.
two_days_late
Is the plug behind the hazard light switch plugged in? I vaguely remember having similar problems, then realised I had that unplugged so the circuit wasn't complete. I think... I could be dreaming? kdotlowe
Behind the alternator light? I haven't checked to be honest, hasn't been fiddled with since being put away but I'll double check tomorrow!
1967anglia
Have you checked that the points arent stuck open, or that there is power to them when they are open with key on.
peteretep
fuck the old escort wiring, check everything not with a continuity meter but with an ohm meter

d.p.n.s
this may sound like a stupid question and the only reason i ask is it somthing i would do. when you parked it up did you disconnect anything so no one can fuck with it and you may have forgotten about.? or has anyone borrowed anything from it to get theyers going? dan
kdotlowe
Haha not a silly question at all! But no, nothing as been taken, was locked up at my grandmas. Got the car working today, gave the points a quick clean up it started after a few attempts. Just got to sort out the instruments now. Only the speedo and oil pressure gauge are working. peteretep
The speedo is mechanical, and I imagine your oil pressure gauge is mechanical too. Is it aftermarket? or do you have a 6 dial dash?
kdotlowe
Yeah I thought that was the case. Nope not aftermarket, is a 6 dial dash. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but I'll have a fiddle around behind there tomorrow.
BlownCorona
gauges sound like an earth problem, looks for corrosion around terminals , also are they wired in such a way that if one bulb blew they all would not light?
kdotlowe
Yeap was exactly that! All working now. Thanks for the help guys!
