ESKIN8R
If 2 senders give the same result, mayb its a fault with the wiring or guage?
grdwalker
the second sender makes scratchy noises when i move it, indcating to me that its rooted, ill try rig up a coil orjust something which sends variable currents through to check the wiring and gauge. (the gauge will show 3/4 of a tank when its full)
QCADTA
get an ohmeter and check to see if the ohms changes as you move the float up and down, cant remember the resistances off the top of my head, would have to go out to the garage . to test your fuel gauge quickly put 12v across and it should shoot across to full,
grdwalker
if i put 12v across the wire connected to the sender unit on the tank? or pull out the dash?
QCADTA
if i put 12v across the wire connected to the sender unit on the tank? or pull out the dash? could be wrong but you should have 12v coming out of that wire which goes to your tank. connect it directly to earth quickly to see if it shoots ya gauge shoots up. the float in the tank varies the resistance to earth which gives your gauge its reading. and make sure you have the key on. Could be the fuel tank not earthing out well. Do the other guages in the dash work?? I seem to remember frying a MK2 fuel guage years ago by jamming the fuel sender wire and earthing in out when fitting the tank. This putting tomuch current threw the guage and burning it out. could be wrong. just some ideas.
peteretep
I have a similar problem on my galant, it reads full when it is, but after about 200km's around town, it will read 1/4 tank and stay like that until it goes below 1/4 and shows empty, real weird, should just go down to PaP and tear out a new one regarding your escort one, can you buy that kind of stuff new from repco? wouldnt surprise me

E Parrot and Son on St Asaph st (CHCH) can repair the resistor in the sending unit and set it to the correct range for your car. Also try to check that the wire holding the float hasn't been bent (affecting the reading) before refitting it and refilling the tank as this is what happened with mine - still haven't got round to fixing it yet though
grdwalker
i think i know problem, i used an ohmeter and found that the resistance goes overload at a point (ie open circuit) the wiper on the coil has probably stayed in the same place and either forced or broken the wires, which as it breaks the circuit, from that point there will be no reading. i just need to know where to buy a replacement.
